Trudeau to speak about mental health at BMGCCThe Bluevale Pastoral Charge will
be presenting Margaret Trudeau at
the Brussels, Morris and Grey
Community Centre auditorium in
Brussels on April 26 to help raise
awareness of the prevalence
and impact of mental health
illness.
Trudeau, who, in the last decade,
was diagnosed with bipolar disorder,
is a great speaker with a unique
perspective on dealing with the issue
according to organizer Carol
Nicholson.
“Trudeau was diagnosed withbipolar disease fairly recently,” shesaid. “Given who she is, she shouldhave received help a lot sooner than
she did. A lot of people are like that,
they don't get diagnosed early and
sometimes have to live most of their
adult life before people realize
what's wrong. We hope she can bring
a lot awareness about mental
health issues and help those who
listen.”
Nicholson said that the event was
brought about by Rev. Dr. Peter
Kugba-Nyande – the minister of the
two-point pastoral charge including
Duff's United Church in Walton and
Bluevale United Church.“There were a number of thingsthat made us want to bring her here,”Nicholson said. “But the big thing
was Rev. Peter. He had been praying
for the families in the area that had
teens who committed suicide.
Because of that, we got talking.”
Nicholson said that the
congregation and members of the
United Church Women were
inspired by Kugba-Nyande and
began discussing how they could
help.
“People need to be aware of the
issue,” she said.
Tickets for the event are still
available and cost $45. Theorganizers hope to fill the auditoriumat the community centre to get theword out about mental health issues.
After her speech, Trudeau will
have a meet and greet with
attendees. Nicholson said that she
would normally sign her books but,
due to an injury, that won't be
happening.
“We just really hope that her
willingness to talk about the issue
will raise awareness in the area,”Nicholson said. “She speaks verycandidly about her diagnosis and herlife before and after it, so we hope
people will realize this isn't an issue
that needs to be hidden and
shunned.”
For tickets, call Nicholson at 519-
887-9028. Tickets can also be
purchased at the Shaw residence

Watson celebrates 104th birthday
Do you have moments in time
when all thoughts just seem related
and the bigger picture of life seems
to come into focus for at least a
minute. Maybe I’m getting to the
wise part of this aging process that
we all do so well. Any way getting
ready for a meeting this week had
me reading all sorts of thoughts
from other people. So if that’s not
enough to get you thinking, then a
couple of birthdays to consider
certainly will.
Gene Watson, Alma’s sister was
104 on Sunday. Her sons Joe and
Bert and families had a nice
gathering, with cake of course, at
Braemar Retirement Centre. Now
just think about the things that have
happened in her time, starting with
her birth in 1909. That involves
nutrition, heating, water, medicine,
clothes and that’s just a start. As a
whole it could be overwhelming but
one bit at a time is rather a joy to
think about. People like Gene really
do appreciate the improvements in
life and with her attitude and
twinkling eyes, family celebrated
another memorable birthday.
Son Phil shares April 7 for a birth
date, but has 72 years to catch Aunt
Gene. His years got me thinking
about distance (Edmonton),
transportation, education,
communication and money. So in
Phil’s 30 to Gene’s 100 years, a lot
of interesting things have happened
and we are privileged to be part of it.
Now if I was just sure about my
purpose here …
“Oh what a Night” was Saturday
night in Blyth. Lots of Brussels and
area folks were in the village to pay
tribute to Frankie Valli and the Four
Seasons at the Memorial
Community Hall. Four decades of
good music was the contribution of
the original group to the music
world. The four in Blyth, from Las
Vegas, were good and with energy
of the ’60s danced and sang to the
memories of the crowd. The hall was
full and most there could have got
on stage and sang right along…now
the dancing might have needed a
little work.
Enjoy the warming days, the buds
and bulbs are a joy to watch as they
progress in their season.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

sandwiches were a hit with the 20 or
so who enjoyed lunch. Comrade

bake table, Sandra Josling the soup
and Jo-Ann McDonald and Mary
Bradshaw, the hot and cold
sandwiches.
Saturday also had four Comrades -
Ron and Daisy Schmidt and Ken and
Linda Bird attending district mixed
double darts being held in Hepworth.
They had a good day and ended up in
a three-way tie for the final berth to
advance to provincials. After the
playoff they were eliminated from
advancing. Congrats to the foursome
for their efforts.
The Sunday night dance had a
good crowd of around 70 enjoy the
music of the Tri-Country Band.

becoming involved on the executive,
