Hurricanes goalies sidelined, Peters put in top spot Sports With a recent injury to second- string Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Dan Ellis, Blyth native Justin Peters has taken to the ice in five straight games for the Hurricanes. Starting March 21, when Peters spent a little less than a minute on the ice against the New Jersey Devils, Peters has been the backbone of Carolina’s defensive team, knocking away 120 of the 132 shots sent his way for an average save percentage of 0.909. While the Hurricanes have been bested in three of the four full games Peters has played since Ellis’s injury, it wasn’t surprising as they were up against some of the top-ranked teams in the league. Most recently, the Eastern Conference second-place Montreal Canadiens downed the Hurricanes 4- 1 on Monday evening. Prior to that, losses were recorded against the third place Winnipeg Jets and sixth- place Toronto Maple Leafs. Peters also led the charge against Winnipeg in a win on March 30 on the road. Ellis will be returning soon, as he was activated from the injured reserve list on April 1 following the cut on his leg that removed him from the game. Analysts suggest that he and Peters will likely split net- minding responsibilities until starting goalie Cam Ward returns to the ice. Ward was sidelined with an injury early in March and will likely be out until mid-to-late April or early May. Black-Brown says that the meal is $10, no matter how many members of your family you bring along. The run is also the first race of the Runpiker Series, which includes runs in Woodstock, Bayfield, Exeter, Ingersoll, Stratford, and more. Black-Brown says that she first became involved with the event through working with late Blyth OPP officer Dave Mounsey and becoming friends with him. So when tragedy struck and Mounsey was killed in a single-vehicle crash, Black-Brown’s good friend Patrick Armstrong founded the Dave Mounsey Memorial Fund and brought her along for the ride. Black-Brown has been involved with the Fund for several years, but this is her second year as race director for the Run Around The Square. For her, it seemed like a instinctive progression. Mounsey was a runner and it seemed only natural to have a running event to try and raise money to buy defibrillators and place them in local public buildings to help honour fallen emergency responders. “Every year the event has gotten bigger,” Black-Brown says. “In 2010 we capped it at 250 runners and in 2011 we upped it to 300 and then 400 in 2012.” Historically, the run has been a huge success, so registering ahead of time is very important if people want to participate, she says. She says she now has a dedicated group of volunteers that has been meeting every two weeks to discuss everything to do with the run, from fundraising to assigning jobs to people for race day. This year’s race is being dedicated to OPP Const. D. Craig Campbell, an officer from the Kincardine area who died in 1985. Black-Brown says that the run will help raise money to buy a defibrillator on behalf of the family and Campbell’s family will choose where the defibrillator should be placed. She says it will be completely up to them. At the time of his death, Black- Brown said, Campbell had only been off of his probation period for three weeks when he was killed by a drunk driver during a pursuit. Black-Brown, as a paramedic, has seen both sides of what the Fund can do for the community. She has seen paramedics honoured by the Fund and she has seen the life-saving power of a defibrillator, if used properly. And once the Fund places a defibrillator, Black-Brown says, it doesn’t end there. The group helps with outreach and training for those who work in the building to ensure that they know how to use the defibrillator. Through her work, Black-Brown says she has seen defibrillators work, and it’s an astounding feeling to see a life saved because of one. “It’s an amazing thing to see. Saving a life is an amazing thing,” she says. The regular season was a work in progress according to the coaching staff as wins started to appear while the boys worked toward the end of the schedule. In the last three games of the season we had two wins and carried that momentum into the playoffs. The playoffs started very successfully and the team ended with five wins and three losses. Needing just a split with Wingham in the last weekend of playoffs to move on to the championship, the PeeWee LL team came up just a little short losing both games which allowed Drayton to overtake them and move on. The playoffs showed that the team could succeed while working together to achieve a common goal. The coaching staff was very proud of the boys and how they came together at the end of the year where it counts most.
