North Huron leaves ice for finals
Working with heat

event was well-attended with dozens flocking to the

Director of Recreation and
Facilities Pat Newson advised North
Huron Township Council on
Monday night that a local hockey
team was having troubles playing its
final games.
“The issue was brought to me over
the weekend,” she said. “When
Blyth and Brussels Minor Hockey
amalgamated two years ago, the
Brussels and Blyth arenas went into
an agreement that Blyth would keep
ice in until the end of the season one
year and Brussels would do it the
next. This year is Brussels’ turn.”
Newson explained, however, that
employees were scheduled to take
the ice out of the Brussels, Morris
and Grey Community Centre soon
and that had forced the Blyth
Brussels Minor Hockey Association
to move one of its team’s final
matches to Central Huron’s new
arena at the Central Huron
Community Complex.
“We’re excited that the Midget
Rep team is in the finals,” Newson
said, referencing the Blyth Brussels
Midget Rep squad that is facing off
against Belmont for the Ontario
Minor Hockey Association Finals.
“They have a game on March 24
and, if necessary, a game on March
30, but the ice is set to come out of
the Brussels arena before March 30.”
Newson explained that North
Huron could keep the ice in the
Blyth Arena for approximately $600
by keeping the doors closed and not
renting out the arena.
That cost could nearly be covered
by the amount that could be made at
the concession stand if a previous
game is any indication, Newson
said.
“Over the weekend, there were
500 people at game two of the series
and the concession stand made about
$500,” she said. “If things go as they
did then, we could gross about
$500.”
Newson explained the ice was set
to come out earlier this week,
however council decided to keep the
ice in so the players could stay in
their home centre.
If a match isn’t needed to settle the
series, which is currently tied at one,
the ice will be removed earlier.
