Sports Midget Reps tied at one for OMHA ‘C’ championship The Blyth Brussels Midget Rep squad has had a years of ups and downs, according to assistant coach Brian Ten Pas, but they’re aiming for the top now. The team is currently embroiled in a best of five series against Belmont for the Ontario Minor Hockey Association ‘C’ finals and, at press time, the series was tied at one game apiece. “Our season was a little up and down, we were put into the ‘B’ scheduling and were up against teams like Mitchell and Kincardine,” he explained. “It was a tough year, but it was a good learning curve for the boys. It benefitted us in the end, though, as we got put back in our own group and now we’re in full stride and moving right along.” Ten Pas explained that the team triumphed over Minto, which won the regional and national Silver Stick tournaments to make the semi-finals for the OMHA year-end tournament which saw them facing off against Norwood, a team they eliminated in four games. “The boys are playing very well,” Ten Pas said on Monday, after the team had lost their first match against Minto. “Last night we just came out of the loop a little. We had some penalties at the start and Minto got some power play goals scored against us. Some of the boys just had trouble getting past that.” The team faced off against Belmont for Game three on Tuesday, but a score was unavailable at press time. They will continue the series with games scheduled for March 24, 30 and 31 if necessary. “The kids have realized what it takes to win and are doing everything they need to,” Ten Pas said. “It’s just a matter of putting it all together now. The team is also currently playing in a “group play” contest against some of their more local talent for the Western Ontario Athletic Association (WOAA). They will tackle the Shallow Lake Lakers for the second time in the series on Friday at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre. The puck drops at 8 p.m. The team is coached by Kyle Stephenson with Ten Pas and Tait Stephenson as assistant coaches. Mike Watson is the team’s trainer and Debbie Coultes is the General Manager. Needing only a tie to advance to the league final tournament, the Bolts secured a 0-0 draw with the visiting Ice Cats. Shea Tiley held the meshed fort to secure the tie and the shutout. The previous week the Lightning had taken a three-points-to-one lead in the four-point series with another 0-0 draw and a 5-1 win over Brantford. Harley Westman opened the scoring in the win, assisted by Kelly Gribbons and Tori Terpstra. Gribbons scored one of her own to make it 2-0 for the Bolts before Brantford stormed back to make it 2- 1 before the end of the second period. The score stayed at 2-1 before the Lightning iced the game late in the third period with three unanswered goals by Gribbons, Ashlee Lawrence and Lexi Smith. Kailyn Soers assisted on both of Gribbons’ goals while Sarah Biesenthal and Cassidy Colhoun earned single assists on the Lawrence and Smith goals. Morgan Baker made several key saves while the game was at 2-1 to keep the Ice Cats to a single goal. The Lightning tied their opening game of the series with Brantford in a 0-0 nail-biter. The Bolts peppered the Ice-Cat goalie with shots, but were held off the score sheet. Shea Tiley was equal to the task, stopping all Brantford shots with some notable saves late in the game to preserve the 0-0 tie. The Midget AA Lightning now advance to the Lower Lakes League championship tournament to be held next weekend in Mississauga. The Lightning will face the four other division champions (Whitby Wolves, Stoney Creek Sabres, Durham West Lightning and Etobicoke Dolphins) in a five-team round-robin style tournament to determine the league champion.
