Mike Millian, president of the BCH Minor Hockey Association, appeared before committee members to plead his case for more ice time at the Central Huron Community Complex. Millian says it is important for the Bayfield Clinton Hensall Minor Hockey Association to be able to play on all of the host community’s rinks, especially given about 70 per cent of the membership of 273, with skaters from ages four to 18, hails from Clinton. Millian is asking for council to act as a mediator between the association and the local skating club, which has ice booked during times the association wants. “We’re running into a bind because we can’t get ice here,” said Millian, noting it is ironic that the players can’t access more Clinton ice time when they played an instrumental role in lobbying efforts for the new arena complex. Millian says the key issue is being able to host tournaments in Clinton, though the current ice time schedule does not permit for it. “We’re giving six months’ notice,” said Millian. “If we can’t have weekend ice, we can’t have a tournament.” Facilities Manager Steve Campbell, who joined a recent meeting between the two sides, says the traditional practice has been for the skating club to have reserved ice time and that the chances are they need the hours they have in order to be able to have trainers and skating professionals on hand. “Last time I checked, they [the skating club] didn’t own the arena,” said Councillor Burkhard Metzger, who says the club should be able to make some compromises with the association. Campbell says the issue is not as cut and dried as it appears. “We’re assuming they [the skating club] can arbitrarily move,” said Campbell. “Maybe they just can’t.” While Campbell said the policy in place has been the same for many years, Councillor Dan Colquhoun suggested it would be foolhardy for council to get involved. “My suggestion is: Don’t get involved with the Hatfields and McCoys.” Millian says minor hockey’s support of the arena complex project DUNGANNON 1-800-665-5675 WALTON 519-529-7951 Fax 519-529-3341 519-887-6023 2013 Chick Days Chicks - Sexed or Mixed Also Available: Turkeys, Geese, Ducks, Layers We have a complete line of SHUR-GAIN Homestead Feeds and Animal Health Products as well as feeders, waterers, heat lamps, baled shavings etc. Serving our friends and neighbours in the farming communities with quality products and personalized service, for over 25 years. • Friday, April 12 for pickup Friday, May 17 • Friday, May 17 for pickup Friday, June 21 Order Dates NOTICE TO THE RATEPAYERS OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF CENTRAL HURON INTERIM TAX BILLS FIRST INSTALLMENT DUE MARCH 28, 2013 MONTHLY OR INSTALLMENT PAYMENT PLANS AVAILABLE By Cheryl Heath Special to The Citizen Continued on page 7
