Innocence Lost: A Play About Steven Truscott finished a well- received run at Montreal’s Centaur Theatre on Feb. 24 and starting soon after at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa in a run that will end on March 16. Playwright Beverley Cooper was commissioned to write the play by the Blyth Festival and in 2008 Innocence Lost premiered in Blyth to rave reviews. It was remounted in 2009 in Blyth. This recent staging of Innocence Lost even has a Blyth connection as Michael Spencer-Davis, after playing Al Capone in The Lonely Diner: Al Capone in Euphemia Township, another Cooper play, plays murder victim Lynne Harper’s father. Pat Donnelly, The Montreal Gazette’s theatre critic called the Centaur Theatre’s production “a compelling legal drama and an astutely observed portrait of a community.” “The action, like that of a page- turner except this story is true and we already know the outcome, hurtles inevitably forward,” said Patrick Langston of The Ottawa Citizen in his review. The production also received favourable reviews from The National Post and The Charlebois Post . Commit your future to the Lord and “You will be a crown of splendour in the Lord’s hand, a royal diadem in the hand of your God.” (Is.62:3) He sees the treasure you really are, and He also knows best how to apply the finishing touches that will make you shine for all to see. Serving as committees of council, the Brussels Santa Claus parade, Ethel Minor Ball, the Walton Area Sports Club and the Winthrop Ball Park, were all approved for $500 each. Wreaths for Remembrance Day services in Brussels and Seaforth were approved with a cost yet to be determined. The only grant approved for an organization that did not make a formal request was for the Huron County Farm and Home Safety Association. Several councillors spoke about the organization’s president Merv Bauer and how he is essentially running a “one-man show” and if he were to step away, the organization would likely fold. Blaney said the organization needed all the help it could get and council agreed, approving a grant for $250. For future grant requests, several councillors felt council should develop a policy that would put the word out that council had a $20,000 grant budget and that funds would be distributed on a first-come-first- serve basis, which would encourage organizations to make requests early, before council had finalized the municipal budget for the year. Council approved the grant budget and announced that the municipal budget would be considered for final adoption at its March 19 meeting. When asked about the budget, Chief Administrative Officer Brad Knight said that there is still work to be done, but that he felt the budget could be passed on March 19. If not, however, it could just be deferred until the next meeting. “There’s going to be a lot more discussion than normal, but I think a decision can be made that night,” Knight said. Local clubs receive HE grants Top o’ the mornin’ The Auburn Lions Club hosted its annual St. Patrick’s Day breakfast on Sunday. There were dozens on hand to take in the breakfast, while members of the Lions Club were in the Irish spirit. From left: Greg Park, Kim Teed and Travis Teed.
