It is the week of March Break holidays and at least the first couple of days, Saturday and Sunday, were beauties. When I was out and about, I could see people in spring jackets and running shoes and even some in shorts. The warm weather has dampened the spirits of the snowmobilers, although I did see the groomer and snowmobiles out late Saturday evening. Unfortunately, as I write, it is raining and the snow is quickly disappearing. Spring break last year was also quite mild. Looking back, we had high temperatures, people were raking their lawns and were out enjoying the taste of spring. The weatherman does suggest that another taste of winter is on its way and by the time you read this, we shall know for sure! There have been some area men away but not all for holidays. Brain McGavin and Ken Pethick from McGavin Farm Equipment and Ben Driscoll were in Belgium for about a week. They were touring factories concerning manufacturing of balers. They were also had a stop in England. Welcome back. Don Dalton, Ken Glanville and Ivo Gerretsen spent a few days in the U.S. They went to Aliance and Geneva, Ohio, where they visited with friends they have met when they holiday at Bowling Green, Ohio. They had a nice time and even went shopping! Welcome to Mary Elliott who is here from Burnaby, B.C. Mary is joining her sister Helen Craig, sister- in-law Sharon Elliott and niece Shannon Craig in attending the World Figure Skating Championship in London. She will catch up with visiting some relatives but will spend most of her week with the ladies staying in London. Pat and Don Dalton joined Jim and Betty Ross for a week in the sunny south. They were in Puerta Valarta, Mexico. They took a taxi tour around Puerto Valarta and their driver was great. He stopped at a place that showed them how tortilla shells are made. The lady makes the dough by hand and rolls it into a ball. Then a press flattens it and it was cooked over a big steel drum. They invited them to fill their shell with the variety of fixings and they were very good! They stopped at a small cantina that served a very special drink. It was beer in a styrofoam cup but topped with a insert that held shrimps, nuts and fruits. It was very interesting and delicious. They spent time walking the beach, downtown Valarta and relaxing. They felt very safe in the city because there were many police and security people around. They found out that the President of Mexico was in Puerto Valarta, so security was in full force. We have get-well wishes and hopes for speedy recovery to go to a few people. Little Jaxon Bromley had surgery last week but is home again and is doing well. This is the first in a number of surgeries to come and we hope he comes along well. We send recovery wishes to Rod Fritz who had surgery last week and hope he comes along well. We understand he should be home soon. Bush Whittard had surgery last week and we send get-well wishes to him. He is home and is doing well. We hope Mary Baan is feeling better soon. She has been under the weather with a serious stomach ailment. We hope Jim McLean has a complete recovery after suffering heart problems. He should be back to Wingham Hospital by week’s end. Congratulations to the midget hockey team on the successful elimination of Norwood in their playoff series. They advance against Belmont next. A couple of young men on the midget hockey team have suffered injuries. We hope Mitch Kellington and Brody TenPas are recovering quickly. The Cranbrook dart league had another exciting night of action and had 23 players out to play. Team Seven, consisting of Pete LeFor, Frank Workman and Rob Vanderveen were able to capture the most games winning the night. Five out of six games is pretty good. There were lots of scores over 100, but the highest score for the men was by Brad Speiran with 135 and for the ladies, Marita LeFor hitting 89. The Club plays only until the end of March. They are planning their year- end banquet now, with the best part being, the ladies don’t have to cook. Fred and Teuni Smith have returned from a two-week holiday in the Dominican Republic. They were at the VIK Hotel Arena Blanca at Punta Cana and it was great. The weather was wonderful with sunny skies everyday and hot, but not too hot, temperatures. The resort had plenty of beach chairs and cabanas and the beach was beautiful, with soft, fine, white sand. The resort featured the usual smorgasbord dining area as well as three à la carte restaurants including Mexican, Italian and international foods. They spent a great deal of time walking on the beach and people watching. They report having a wonderful and relaxing holiday. Former Brussels native, Dave Huether, has another gold medal for his mantel after competing in the 2013 Ontario Senior 55+ Winter Games held in Huntsville in late February. Dave is a member of the Brampton Sports Unlimited Senior 55+ Falcons Hockey team and they are the gold medal champions. This makes a “threepeat” after winning gold in Brockville in 2009, gold in Haliburton/Minden in 2011 and now gold in Huntsville in 2013. The competition was very strong. They won the first game 4-0 over Durham region (Oshawa/Whitby) and then defeated Lanark District (Brockville/Gananoque) 2-1, with the winning goal scored in the last 23 seconds of the game. Theyadvanced to the quarter finals anddefeated the Grey/Bruce District (Owen Sound/ Collingwood /Port Elgin) by a score of 2-1 after being tied after regulation time and tied after overtime. The game was won after going through seven shooters for each team in the shootout. They advanced to the semi-finals, where Brampton defeated Stormont/Dundas (Cornwall) by a score of 2-1. After being down 1-0 with only five minutes left in thegame, Brampton scored two goals inthe dying minutes to win it. It was a wild finish. It was on to the finals against Windsor, and Dave says, undoubtedly, the best 55+ hockey team they had ever faced. They were down 2-0 with five minutes left in the game and scored two goals to tie the game. Overtime led to no goals. This time the Falcons won the five- man shootout 2-1 and won the game 3-2. It was an incredible come-from- behind victory to win the goldmedal.Brampton now will represent the Province of Ontario against the other provinces and territories at the 2014 Canada Senior 55+ Games in Strathcona, Alberta in August 2014. Interestingly, another former local man was competing in the same senior games.
