Schimanski wins bronze medal at CIS weight throw
Hefting heavy metals
Brussels native Ami Schimanski came up big last week in
Edmonton when she took bronze at the Canadian
Interuniversity Sport Track and Field Championships.

Ami Schimanski of Brussels won
the bronze medal in women’s weight
throw at the Canadian
Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Track &
Field Championships in Edmonton
last week with a throw of 17.24
metres. This followed a gold medal
performance at the Ontario
University Athletics (OUA) Track
Championships in Windsor on
Feb. 23 with a throw of 17.51
metres.
Schimanski, in her final year at the
University of Windsor, holds the
Lancer record in the event at 17.89
metres.
The weight throw is an indoor
track and field event, predominately
in North America. The technique
implemented to throw the weight is
similar to that of the hammer throw
in outdoor competition.
In international competition, the
women's weight is a 20-lb. ball with
a D-ring or triangle handle attached
directly to the weight. The technique
in wide use is to start in a throwing
circle with the thrower's back to the
landing area. The weight is then
swung overhead to gain momentum
before transitioning into the
spinning position. The thrower will
turn heel to toe up to four times
across the ring and toward the front
of the circle.
At the front of the circle, the
thrower releases the weight over
his/her shoulder and into the landing
area.
Novice AE squad ties Zurich
After a disappointing loss to
Zurich in the first game of the series,
the Blyth Brussels Minor Hockey
Association Novice AE team
travelled to Zurich March 6 to play
but neither team could earn the win.
Zurich got on the scoreboard first
but that didn’t discourage the Blyth
Brussels team as they got down in
their end and with a pass from Owen
Newel and Kaleb Roth, Colby
Nicholson slammed the puck in the
corner of the net to tie the game.
With back and forth play all game
Zurich squeaked another by but
Blyth Brussels soon tied it up with
Dawson Dunbar passing it to Brett
McCutcheon.
With exciting plays and close calls
on nets, the game went into a 10
minute overtime period where
neither team could get it past the
pads of the goalies so the game
remained a tie.
The sting of defeat
The Blyth Brussels Novice AE team were unable to best
their contemporaries from Zurich, losing to the visiting team
on Sunday afternoon in overtime by a score of 2-1. (Vicky

On Saturday, March 9 the
Wingham Golf and Curling Club
played host to the Wingham and
District Hospital “Healthcare Rocks
Bonspiel”. Organizer John Smuck
did a great job putting this event
together with proceeds going to the
Doctor Recruitment Committee.
The first draw winners were Terri
Forster’s team skipped by son Kyle
with daughter Ashley and Ben
Procter. The second draw had Lloyd
Wheeler, Jess Smith, Joe Nicholson
and Murray Johnston come out on
top. This weekend, March 16, the
club will host the annual “fun spiel”.
Joan and Scott Bridge have the spiel
full again and with their hard work
make this a great fundraiser for the
club.
In regular league action Monday,
March 4 the daytime curlers
winning skips were Roy Aitchison,
Glenn McMichael, Barry Elliott.
Norm Fairles, Larry Johnston and
Barry Simpson. Monday night Bill
McDonald and Simpson helped skip
their teams to victory. The Tuesday
night ladies skips going home with
wins were Kelsie Eadie, Sue Fair
and Carol Horton.
The Tuesday competitive league
saw Earl Fitch and Niel Edgar come
out on top. On Wednesday night
mixed group had teams Robert
Grein, Rob Middleton, Wayne
Horton and Julie Hallahan finish the
regular season with wins.
The Thursday daytime curlers had
12 teams hit the sheets with Glenn
McMichael, Norm Fairles, Larry
Johnston, Barry Simpson, Stewart
Leedham and Bill Tolton taking
home victories. The Thursday
Belgrave winners were Murray
McNichol, Larry Johnston and
Murray Sheill while Fred Meier and
Niel Edgar battled to a draw. Friday
night teams Simon Logtenberg and
Wayne Waechter wrapped up the
week with wins.
Over the weekend Blyth Brussels
Atom Local League Burgundy team
travelled to Lucknow for a one-day
tournament to end their hockey year
and walked away with the gold.
Starting at 10 a.m. the team
got their first win by beating
Hanover 4-2.
After lunch and blowing off some
steam the team was ready to play
their next game against Embro.
While the first period didn’t see
much scoring, Blyth Brussels got on
the scoreboard in the second period
and didn’t stop, eventually taking
the game 3-0. The Most Valuable
Player Award was handed out to
Cole Zwep for that game.
The team was excited and pumped
to be playing in the final game
against St Marys.
Blyth Brussels hit the ice
flying, scoring four goals in the first
period.
By the end of the third, they had
notched five more, earning
goaltender Ty McNichol a shutout
and MVP Award for the game.
