Just how many of us really did start our lineage in Ireland. Only a few generations back, a lot of our ancestors did leave the green hills to make a better life in the new land. I for one am pleased they did. March Break is in progress, a time for a little fun with the school-age crowd. There are lots of things to do in our area, so I hope you took advantage of some of the interesting things available to do with the kids in your life. Jill from Listowel has made our plans and they involve a lot of water time. So I guess my exercise will be adequate for this week. One of my birthday presents this year was a getaway to Niagara Falls, so we spent it last week. The falls are beautiful with the many different ice sculptures and the mist blowing. The seagulls must be on constant duty at the base as they seem to circle there every season of the year. A nice warm large pool was the highlight for me. It was the centrepiece of a tropical space with trees that were higher than the two-storey hotel as well as lots of plants, several in bloom. It’s hard to think about tours when your book and the pool are right there outside your door. So the pool won and we only did “Bird Kingdom” as tourists. Now for anyone who loves birds, that is one neat place. Bird Kingdom is three storeys in an old factory-type building. One section has cages for specific birds as well as some pretty great reptiles, a burmese python, a cobra and a tortoise look pretty fine behind glass. Another floor has trees, plants, nests, baskets, feeders and perches that let the many different small coloured birds fly free. It was nice to sit and watch their behaviour, so much like people we know. The third storey opens down to the first where waterfalls, a living wall, streams, ponds and more lush green vegetation hosted larger birds that were free to wander and fly about. Smaller versions of the flamingo were fun to watch as they made their way to the top of the waterfall section. By the time we were done wandering, seven of the salmon- coloured pretties were standing at the top. The vivid colours were a treat to the eyes and a few hours well spent. Now it’s back to tax time and the not-so-tropical world of Brussels. Get your green duds out and celebrate. Bye now, Betty G.W. While it isn’t exactly the gym and snow doesn’t pad as well as professional mats, students like Aliya Dauphin, left, will take every chance they can to practice their handstand at North Woods Elementary School, especially when they have a spotter on hand like Avery McCutcheon. (Denny Scott photo) By Jo-Ann McDonald It was a usual week with meetings of Cadets, darts, pipe band practice and meals at the Brussels Legion branch. The Branch hosted the Zone Convention on Sunday afternoon at the Branch. Brussels Branch had six Comrades attending and two Comrades holding District titles. President Deb Cann welcomed the Comrades to the afternoon meeting. There were about 70 delegates attending for the business meeting and elections. The new Zone Commander for Zone C1 is Comrade Larry Bailey and the new Deputy Zone Commander elected was our own Branch Comrade Eric Ross. This is Eric’s second time serving at Zone level. He was elected as Deputy Zone Commander at the spring convention in Brussels in March 1997, 16 years ago. Congratulations Comrade Eric. A roast beef dinner followed the conclusion of the meeting and 50 Comrades stayed to enjoy the meal. The ladies helping serve the dinner for convention included Judy Lee, Mary Bradshaw, Linda Bird, Deb Cann and Jo-Ann McDonald. Get-well wishes go out to Comrade Greg Wilson who is in a Cambridge hospital and has had a hip replacement. Get-well wishes go to Comrade Bush Whittard who had surgery in Stratford.
