hired
Film festival coming to Blyth at end of March
On March 30, Blyth Memorial
Hall will be hosting a unique film
fest featuring “any and every
outdoor adventure” according to
organizer Douglas Barill.
“Really anything is involved, any
paddlings, sport, anything from
mountain biking to paddling or
board,” he said. “We’re going to
have over 60 films to choose from to
select what’s shown.”
The event, called the World Tour
2013 Reel Paddling Film Festival, is
being hosted by Composite
Creations, Painted Black Studio, the
Blyth Business Improvement Area
(BIA) and the Blyth Festival
Theatre. Proceeds from the event
will go towards the BIA.
“This is going to be part of a much
larger happening,” Barill explained,
saying this was the first annual
festival.
The event will feature a matinee
showing for a select audience and
then at 6 p.m. a trade show focusing
on outdoor equipment will be held
followed by the films at 7 p.m., an
intermission and food at 8:30 p.m.
and the films resuming at 9 p.m. The
event will be catered by the Queens
Bakery and Part II Bistro.
“It’s going to be a heck of a good
film fest,” Barill said. “We’re having
a matinee for local soccer, hockey
and scouting and guiding
associations to help get them
interested.”
Holding the event in Blyth was
both due to the facilities being here
and because it gave organizers the
opportunity to advertise the village
on a larger stage according to Barill.
“We have the facilities in Blyth
and it’s something that other people
aren’t doing,” he said. “There is
national sponsorship for the event
and there are advertisements already
in paddling magazines that advertise
Blyth on that level.”
Between the two shows, Barill
says that there will be 880 people
coming into Blyth for the event if
they sell out.
While North Huron Township
Economic Development Co-
ordinator Connie Goodall is
involved, the show is being
completely funded by the
aforementioned hosts.
“We’re renting the hall as
entrepreneurs,” Barill said. “We’re
seeding the event but we did invite
people like Connie and [Peter Smith,
Artistic Director of the Blyth
Festival] to give them input.”
Barill said that having Smith
involved was a boon for the event as
he has 30 years experience in putting
on shows. He also said that the film
fest is a great example of an event
that can be held in Blyth to help
expand on the shoulder seasons
around the Blyth Festival’s playbill
at Memorial Hall.
The films are more made for the
“YouTube generation” according to
Barill who said that they run from 15
to 25 minutes long.
“It’s kind of like the BBC Planet
Series meets the Red Bull Series,”
he explained. “It’s not necessarily
like a film fest they would hold in
Goderich or a fiction film fest. It’s
about people enjoying the outdoors.
I’m really getting stoked for the
event.”
Tickets for the March 30 show are
available at the Blyth Festival, the
Queens Bakery, Part II Bistro and
Painted Black Studio and cost $10.

as possible with technology.”
He said, “We will keep our
important focus on faith formation
for all of our children. We are a
Catholic school board and we work
on the growth of the whole person.
We celebrate Catholic faith,
Catholic learning and the journey of
faith formation.”
MacDonald lives in London with

Superintendent Gerry Thuss was
appointed as Acting Director until
MacDonald assumes the position on
April 1.
