The Citizen, 2013-03-07, Page 2PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MARCH 7, 2013.The Brussels Lions Club will besubsidizing the cost of swimminglessons this year at the Brussels,Morris and Grey swimming pool.During a recent meeting, it wasdecided that the club would pay $20 towards the cost of each lessonregistration this year, making the cost of lessons more affordable
for everyone than in previous
years. Vouchers will be distributed
and can be redeemed at the
arena during the registration
nights being held on March 5
and 7.
In addition to benefits of learning
water safety, swimming lessons are
a major source of income for the
pool and the recreation committee.
Providing an opportunity to learn to
swim at a young age was the
primary drive when the Brussels
Lions Club undertook to fundraise
and build a community pool in the
mid-1980s. Since that time,
hundreds of children have had theopportunity to learn to swim close to home and in doing so, have
provided employment to many local
youth. The local pool has been a
focal point for summer activity ever
since.
The local Lions Club has
continued to fund capital
expenditures at the facility since
the pool was opened in 1986,
including major upgrades
which were undertaken last
spring. It was felt that subsidizing
lessons might be a more appropriate
way to provide support to the
community this year, by attracting
as many as possible to the local
pool.
Spring is in the air. Okay I heard
that on the radio and it was a very
nice thought as I admire the pretty
flakes floating down.
Another good sign that spring will
come is the garden show was in
Stratford last week. The Lung
Association organizes this event and
brings many smiles to the faces of
folks wandering through the
exhibits dreaming of gardens and
spring. It’s great to see all the local
businesses showing their wares.
Collecting business cards for
another time – bird feeders that stick
to windows, or sinks made from
pretty rock or plants that float in
ponds and of course lots and lots
and lots of bulbs and seeds that are
really wanting to come home with
you. The theme this year was
“reflections” and there was several
folks from our area doing just that
before they stepped back into the
chill.
If you find yourself with a quiet
Wednesday afternoon, pop into the
United Church for a chat and laugh.
Don’t come if competitive cards is
your nature. Depending on who is at
your table, the rules seem to fly at
times. Crib, Scrabble and crokinole
seem to bring out interesting words
and conversations as well. So give it
a try. Links is every Wednesday 1:30
to 3 p.m.

By Jo-Ann McDonald
The week at the Brussels Legion
Branch began with the Brussels
Lions Club hosting its monthly
meeting. They enjoyed a roast pork
dinner and then continued with their
meeting. They then had a social time
playing cards. Ladies of the Branch
who helped included Jo-Ann
McDonald, Mary Bradshaw, Mabel
Glanville and Linda Bird.
The Cadets cancelled their
meeting on Tuesday evening due to
the threat of the oncoming storm.
The Branch held its executive and
general meeting on Tuesday
evening. There were eight executive
members present. They committee
examined the financial reports for
the past few months. They approved
a donation toward the cost of busing
to Norwood for the Midget hockey
team for playoffs. Ideas for
upcoming fundraising events and
postponing of other events were
discussed. The sports report
included a motion to give Ron
Schmidt funds for expenses for his
trip to Provincial dart competition in
March. The Zone Convention is
being held at the Branch on March
10 and the voting numbers for the
Branch is two. Attendance for the
day is expected to be around 80 and
a dinner will be served following the
afternoon’s proceedings. There will
be representatives from the other 11
Branches in the Zone attending to
elect a Zone and new deputy Zone
Commander.
The Thursday night darts had only
11 darters taking aim at the boards.
Winners were: first, Sandra; second,
John and Sheron Stadelmann; high
shot, Gord Jacklin, 133 and Sandra,
138; high start, Deb Cann, 104.
The Friday night supper of
cabbage rolls was enjoyed by nearly
30 folks. Thanks to supper helpers
Mary Bradshaw, Deb Cann and
Mabel Glanville in Jo-Ann’s
absence. This week’s supper will be
roast beef.
The Huron County dart league
held its day of play at the Branch.
The nearly 60 men started play at
1:30 and finished their day by 4:30
p.m.
A reminder that the Branch still
collects the pop cans and returnable
bottles for their fundraising
project.

further training options.
In addition, a representative from
Service Canada will be at the
meeting to make a presentation on
Employment Insurance, including
the application process and other
supports and benefits.
The idea behind the meeting, says
Huron East Mayor Bernie
MacLellan, is to help residents have
all of their questions answered and
paperwork filled out in one place at
one time.
He also said that the morning
could include some information
that employees didn’t know,
like that they could receive
severance packages through Service
Canada.
“We want to make sure we have as
many people there as possible,”
MacLellan said. “We want to have
people there who can explain the
next steps, relieve some concern and
hopefully answer some questions.”
In addition to representatives
from Service Canada and
Employment Ontario, and their
various local branches, MacLellan
will be at the meeting, as well as
Knight.
“Hopefully everyone will get all
of their answers in one place,”
MacLellan said, “because other than
that, there’s not much else we can
do.”
For more information on the
meeting, contact the Municipality of
Huron East at 519-527-1060.
A sign of the changing of the
season, it will be time to spring
forward on Sunday, March 10, as
clocks go ahead one hour signalling
the beginning of Daylight Saving
Time.
Traditionally Daylight Saving
Time begins on the second Sunday
of March every year. The official
change-over takes place at 2 a.m. on
the morning of March 10.
The clocks will then remain that
way until Nov. 2, when they go
back again.

Telling a story
Melville Presbyterian Church in Brussels hosted a celebration of the World Day of Prayer on
Thursday, Feb. 28. As part of the celebration, which focused on France this year, a group of
women took to the front of the meeting room to read stories about women in France and their
challenges and successes. Every year, a country is chosen to focus on for the World Day of
Prayer. (Denny Scott photo)
