Maitland River Elementary School wants to have its new mascot and logo chosen before students enter their new next school year this September. For several days, the students and staff at the school have been pouring over selections narrowed down by six Grade 4 and 5 students chosen randomly. Those six students pared the entries down to six through an elimination process refered to as a “dotmocracy” which allows each individual to pick several of the options leaving the less favourable mascot and logo pairings behind. The same process was used in selecting the name of the newlycreated school.A final decision was reached after press time and will be reported on in The Citizen as soon as possible. Getting to that stage, however, was a difficult process according to Principal Alice McDowell. “We had 35 to 40 entries showcased in our front hall so they could be viewed,” she explained, stating that all of them were from students. “We started the competition in the beginning of February.” The deadline closed last week and the final vote and tally was decided on Tuesday evening. Tallying the votes of the students from both campuses as well as staff, school council and school boardtrustee Colleen Schenk, the finaldecision will be made by more than 500 individuals. “We should have a logo andmascot as we reach the end of theprocess,” McDowell explained in an e-mail to The Citizen. The school has been runningwithout a mascot or logo so far, butwill adopt the new one as soon as possible. PAGE 32. A big area of concern is that rainfall was spotty last year with cases of considerable rainfall just a mile or so away from farms that were missed entirely. Rainfall, however, is measured on a regional basis for the program and that measurement may have nothing to do with reality. Jim Ginn, mayor of Central Huron joined the complaints. “I know we didn’t receive the rainfall the gauge said we did,” he said. “We had the worst drought in 50 years and my [insurance] cheque was less than my premium.” He warned that some farmers will not enroll in the program because they’re so angry. Ginn said he had called Agricorp to use records from other rain gauges that are closer than the gauges currently being used, such as those of conservation authorities and the Goderich airport. Royce assured people that Agricorp is reviewing its forage insurance program in view of the complaints from across the province.
