By Rachel Robinson With Family Day on Monday, the St. Anne’s Catholic Secondary School Eagles were in for a shorter week that was even shorter due to snow days on Tuesday and Wednesday. Welcomed back to school on Thursday, the senior Eagles participated in graduation photo retakes. The junior volleyball team travelled to St. Michael’s Catholic Secondary School in Stratford to compete in matches. On Friday, graduation photo retakes continued and Eagles were invited to wear blue and donate a toonie in honour of the school’s sponsor child, José. The St. Anne’s Nordic ski team travelled to Duntroon Ski Club to participate in the final ski meet of the year. Way to go Eagles! Students in Grades 6, 7 and 8 came to St. Anne’s on Friday evening to enjoy a Mardi Gras dance held by the school’s Me to We club. Everyone had a fantastic time and all the money raised goes towards building an agricultural school in rural Kenya. By Pastor Andrew Versteeg Brussels Community Bible Chapel When I was a bit younger one of my favourite sports was soccer. In elementary school it was my goal to be a regular player on the school team. I wanted to be a starter. The guys who didn’t start were the substitutes. They got their opportunity to play when one of the starters needed a break or was injured. The reason they were called substitutes was because they took another player’s place on the field until the starter was ready to get back in the game. One of the essential truths of the Christian faith is the truth that Jesus became our substitute, not in a game of soccer or something trivial like that, but in life and death. Jesus became our substitute in life by living a perfect sinless life that our Holy Creator God requires of us in order of have fellowship with Him. Then Jesus also became our substitute in death by taking our sin upon Himself and bearing the judgment of God for that sin so that we could go free and live eternally with God. This truth of Jesus being our substitute is the good news (gospel) of God to us. We have a substitute in life and death, namely Jesus, who took our place so that we can live eternally and be saved from the judgment that is coming from God. Recently I have been reading through the book of Acts in the Bible. The book of Acts records the spread of the gospel and the growth of the church after Jesus died and rose again. The book of Acts records how the disciples of Jesus and the first Christians were excited and thrilled and led by the Holy Spirit to spread the good news of Jesus’ death and resurrection for us. Nothing could stop them, and they went everywhere. By the end of the book almost all the known world at that time had heard the gospel and the message was still spreading. The message is still spreading today and it will continue to spread until Jesus returns. Jesus promised in Matthew 24:24 that the gospel would be preached in all the world and then the end will come. Two weeks ago we had a missionary couple at church who is preparing to go to Papua New Guinea to continue to spread this gospel to those who have never heard the message. We need to support missions because many today still have not heard this good news. One of the things that stood out to me in the book of Acts was how this gospel was spreading. It was not done by some elaborate evangelism program or strategy, but rather, very simply by men and women who were on fire for the Lord, and were being led by the Holy Spirit. These early Christians were proclaiming this message everywhere; in one-on-one conversations, in the marketplace, in the coffee shops, in the town squares, in the places of religious worship, wherever the Lord gave them an opportunity. Reading the book of Acts, I couldn’t help but think what it would be like in this area where we live, if the Holy Spirit thrilled and excited God’s people with this message like it happened in the book of Acts. Some of our churches are dwindling and struggling to continue and we desperately need the Lord to revive us. We need to pray for a revival, for the Lord to fill us and excite us about the gospel. We need to understand it and believe it and proclaim it. We are all sinners and we all deserve to be punished for our sin, but God has provided a substitute who is Christ Jesus, the Lord. If we believe it and know the Lord, then let’s proclaim it.
