the home of leader Monique Baan of
Walton on Saturday, Feb. 23.
President Hayden Flood called the
meeting to order at 9 a.m. with the 4-
H pledge and a roll call. This week’s
roll call asked members to name
what their dream small engine would
be to own.
This meeting, members learned
about keeping an engine clean andhow to clean a dirty one. Theylearned about the purpose of an aircleaner and a fuel cleaner, and how
each part works. Later, members
began to take the engine out of the
bike, and this week, members took
the engine apart to see what was
wrong with it and why it would not
start. Members got the motor mostly
apart and discovered a hole in the
motor’s piston.
After getting cleaned up, members
devoured a snack, while the
treasurer’s report was given by Jacob
Flood and the minutes of the last
meeting were given by secretary
Nick Vinnicombe. The Club’s
members adjourned the meeting
with the 4-H Motto, “Learn to do by
Doing.”
Previously, the club held their
second meeting on Feb. 9 at 9 a.m. at
leader Monique Baan’s house.
After opening with the 4-H
pledge, leader Reg Vinnicombe went
over some technical terms for parts
of small engines, what the part does
and how to troubleshoot a small
engine when it will not start. After
this Reg assisted all the members in
disassembling a Suzuki dirt bike. By
the end of the meeting the engine
was removed from the frame and
ready to be fixed for the next
meeting.
The meeting came to a close with
a snack and the 4-H motto.
Skills and tools for life
The 4-H Spark Plugs are learning what they need to know to keep any small engine going
during their weekly meeting. Shown learning how to disassemble and troubleshoot an engine
are, from left, Craig Baan, Emma Baan and Jacob Gulutzen. (Photo submitted)

Pork producers conference features local farmers
It was another week of difficult
weather but just think, spring is only
20 days away. According to the
calendar, the first day of spring is
March 20 and daylight savings time
begins on March 10. A sure sign and
hopefully better weather, spring is
on the way. Easter is early this year
and will be celebrated at the end of
March with Good Friday being
March 29. For those people who are
always thinking ahead, it is only 10
months until Christmas.
The community was shocked with
the news of the passing of Kelly
Dalton. Our condolences to Sharon
and children Jamie, Jason and Kelly
Ann and their families. Kelly had
farmed near Winthrop all his life. He
loved to curl, go hunting and fishing
and play cards. He loved the times
with his family and all the special
times together. He was a friendly and
jovial sort and enjoyed life. He will
be missed by his family and all his
friends. Our sympathies to all.
Local area farmers were guest
speakers at the one-day
Southwestern Ontario Pork
Producers conference this past week.
Dave and Jeff Linton attended the
event at Ridgetown in the Rudy
Brown Rural Development Centre.
The theme for the conference was
“Options and Opportunities” and the
practical use in the barn and the bank
account. It was to impart practical
knowledge and information to
improve operation management and
profitability. Dave has been a pork
producer for nearly 40 years and Jeff
is vesting his interests in raising
pasture pork. Way to go Lintons.
Congratulations to Marnie and
Steve Knight on becoming
grandparents for a second time. They
have welcomed a second grandson
named Charlie, a little brother for
Jack. Shane and Stefanie are the
proud parents in Toronto.
Welcome back to Bruce and
Rhonda Fischer and Ken and Linda
Smith. They spent holiday time in
Costa Rica and had a great time.
Bruce reports that it was in the low
40s a couple of days – too hot for
him. You could burn your feet just
getting from the pool back to your
cabana on the cement, so sandals
were necessary most of the time. The
girls enjoyed the sun, the sand and
the heat, reports Bruce.
The Cranbrook Dart Club still had
their night of play considering the
blustery weather on Feb. 20. There
were 15 players who braved the cold
and snow to come out and play.
Three boards were filled instead of
the usual four. Getting started
seemed to be a problem for some
teams but there were no skunks.
When spouses play again one
another, it also presents challenges
and frustrations, but in the end, it is
all part of the fun. The eventual
winners for the evening were Pat
Gillis with 110 and Murray
Houston with 140. Way to go
everyone!
Celebrating birthdays this past
week to end the month of February
include Steve Knight, Kevin
McNaughton, Joel Dalton, Rachel
Sutcliffe, Bruce McDonald, Tamara
Williamson, Chris Lee, Carly
Terpstra, Terry Nichol, Beverly
Stevenson, Ava Robinson and leap-
year babies Ryan Baan and Nathan
Bachert.
Justin Thompson of Morris-
Turnberry pled guilty to one charge
of operating a motor vehicle while
disqualified in Wingham court on
Feb. 21. Crown Attorney Laura
Grant said that on Nov. 13, 2011,
near Wroxeter, police had reason to
stop a motorcycle which was being
driven by Thompson.
When questioned, Grant said,
Thompson said his name was Derek
Rose of Stratford and that while he
was a licensed driver, he did not have
his driver’s licence with him.
Police then brought Thompson to
the Wingham Police station where
officers recognized the man as
Thompson, who was a prohibited
driver at the time of the incident.
Thompson’s lawyer stated that
Thompson is 24 and has often acted
impulsively while at the same time
struggling with drugs. The lawyer
said that Thompson is now living
with his grandparents who paid out a
substantial amount of money for
their grandson to attend a
rehabilitation program near
Chatham. He added that Thompson
hopes to get his life back in order
and to become a licensed driver once
again soon.
Judge R.G.E. Hunter ordered
Thompson to pay a $500 fine and
also gave him 12 months’ probation.
Hunter gave Thompson three
months to pay the fine. One count of
possession of stolen property and
one count of public mischief were
withdrawn by the crown attorney.
Thompson is also charged with
transportation fraud and three
charges of failing to comply with the
conditions of his bail, for which he
will return to Wingham court on
March 21.
IMPAIRED DRIVING
Derek Hunt of Dublin pled guilty
to one charge of impaired driving
and one charge of failing to provide
a breath sample after a run-in with
police on Dec. 15, 2012.
Grant said police were called to
the scene of a single-vehicle
collision just before midnight after
several witnesses saw a vehicle
travel through a T intersection and
almost hit another car before leaving
the roadway and ultimately coming
to rest in a nearby field.
When police arrived, Grant said,
they noticed the strong odour of
alcohol coming from Hunt, the
driver of the vehicle in question.
Police asked Hunt to provide a
sample of his breath for testing,
however, he did not provide a
sample that was able to be tested. On
the first attempt, Grant said, Hunt
kept stopping the stream of air and
when he did blow air, he blew it out
of the sides of his mouth and his
nose, making it unreadable by the
machine. Police instructed him to
blow air straight out of his mouth
and into the machine and he failed to
do so on multiple attempts,
eventually refusing.
Hunter ordered Hunt to pay a
$1,000 fine on each of the two
counts and also handed down a 12-
month driving prohibition. Hunt has
six months to pay the fines.
