Superintendent of Finance Janet Baird-Jackson told the board that because there were substantial changes to the budget this year, the Ministry of Education requires that the board of trustees approve the changes. “The Ministry of Education needs our updated data to quantify their own year-end projections,” said Baird-Jackson. She said the revised estimates reporting cycle allows boards an opportunity to update their initial Estimates filed by incorporating current (Oct. 31) enrolment data and a number of months of financial activity into their estimates. Finance Committee Chair Randy Wagler said that the revised estimate budget numbers are really driven by enrolment and initial projections were very accurate. “It means that we are not overstaffed or understaffed and that is good news. We didn’t change revenues too much because of enrolment,” he said. “The big things that changed were things like capital because we don’t know what it is going to be in June, but once year-end is finalized, that changes things,” he said, noting there was a $3.35 million change due to the timing of major construction projects. He added, “In June, we anticipated Bill 115 or something along those lines but we didn’t know the impact. So now we see an increase in the Board approves estimates budget Network ADVERTISE ACROSS ONTARIO OR ACROSS THE COUNTRY! For more information contact your local newspaper.
