The ongoing saga of midwestern
Ontario weather continues. On
Monday, Feb. 11 there was no
school because of the icy road
conditions. It was actually a nice
day, but you had to be careful
walking. Then it started to snow and
snow it did. Inches and inches of
snow came down in a big hurry. The
drive home later Monday evening
was not the greatest and the thoughts
of another “storm” day seemed like a
real possibility. The snow stopped in
the night, the plows did their jobs
and the day was fine. There was lots
of snow to move, but a good day for
driving.
Our get well wishes go to Sandra
Machan who has suffered a broken
shoulder in a fall. We hope she
recovers quickly.
There were three area families
away for a “family” time a little
early last week. The Great Wolf
Lodge is a very popular family resort
in Niagara Falls. Geoff and Michelle
Dalton, Brandon, Hannah and Brady
spent a couple of days there.
Brandon reports that the big orange
water slide goes outside and then
indoors again and is really fun.
Brett and Laura Fischer, Tyson
and Luke, also spent a couple of
days at the lodge. Laura reports thatthey had a great time and they raninto another local couple. Chad and
Crystal McCallum, Kaleigh and
Bridget, also spent a few days at the
lodge the same weekend.
Ron and Betty McCallum with
friends Gerry and Martha Sykes
from Mitchell spent a few days
away. They went to St. Louis,
Missouri. They went to see the
biggest toy show that features
antique, old and new replica tractors,
machinery etc. and had a great time.
Returning from a trip to Florida
are Anna, Shauna and Camden
Hamilton. They spent a week at
Disney World. They had a nice time
and enjoyed all the resort and area
had to offer.
The February birthday bash for the
Brussels ladies was held on
Valentine’s Day. They enjoyed a
wonderful lunch at JR’s. The
honoree of the day was Bev Palmer
who celebrated a milestone this
month. Bev has joined the 80s club.
Helping her celebrate were Nora
Stephenson, Isabel Wheeler, Jane
Hall, Audrey Cardiff, Betty
Campbell, Laura Barbour, Marg
Work, Alice Marks, Dale Chesher,
Leona Armstrong, Merle Cousins,
Lois McCutcheon, and Marie
McCutcheon. Happy birthday Bev.
We understand Nelva Scott is a
patient in Parkwood Hospital. She is
having a few things checked out and
hopefully will not be away too
long.
Valentine’s Day was made a little
extra special by a dozen or so
Harmony King singers. They
appeared at a few business
establishments over the lunch hour
on Valentine’s Day. They sang songs
of love, very appropriate for
Valentine’s Day, at Cinnamon Jim’s,
Brussels Foodland and at Brussels
Agri-Services. The leader of the
group for their day away was Barry
Mahon. Local singers included Jim
Lee, Gerry Storey and birthday boy
Jack Cardiff.
Many Brussels residents will
remember Ken Innes, a former
pastor at Melville Presbyterian
Church. He passed away last week
in Winnipeg. Ken and his wife Carol
left Brussels in the mid 1980s and
went to the west where her family
was from. Ken was well-liked in the
community and was an avid curler.
Our sympathies are extended to his
family.
Our condolences to George
Adams on the loss of his wife,
Maxine. Maxine had suffered a
broken hip earlier last week. She had
hip surgery on Saturday, but
unfortunately passed away Sunday
morning. Our sympathies to their
children and extended family.
Our sympathies are extended to
Mervyn and Donna Bauer on the
passing of their grandson, Kyle
Lorimer. Kyle was the cherished son
and will be sadly missed by his
mother Kim, Ottawa and will be
missed by father Don and sister
Kristen. Our condolences to all the
family and extended family
members.
Neil McGavin has returned from a
skiing trip to British Columbia. The
same group of men have a yearly trip
and locals included Neil, Larry
Wheatley and Ken Campbell. They
went to Kelowna and skied at Silver
Star. They had a great week with
great weather. Neil reports the snow
was all natural and you would just
swoosh, swoosh down the hill.
Welcome back.
The Cranbrook Dart Club had 20
members out to play on Feb. 13.
Cake and lots of goodies for
Valentine’s were enjoyed after the
night’s play. Winners were: high
lady, Rita Bowers, 119; high man,
Frank Workman, 128. Many others
were lucky to get scores over 100.
The group had a great night of fun
and laughter.
The Walton Community Hall was
the venue for a community party on
Saturday evening. The party was
organized by B.J. deJong and
members of the community
Celebrating birthdays this past
week include Valerie Gratto, Keith
Clark, Connor Driscoll, Jack Knight,
Hayden Lee, Allan Searle, Murray
Houston, Monica McNichol, Phil
Blake, Brian Dolmage, Jenna
Martene, Shawna Terpstra, Helen
Brenie, Steve Blake, Kathy Clark
and Tyler Williamson. Happy
birthday to all.
Harmony Kings serenade Brussels on Feb. 14
A day of romance
The Seaforth Harmony Kings, of which Jim Lee, third from left, is a member, were busy on
Valentine’s Day, serenading their way through several businesses in the Village of Brussels.
Here, they took time to stop at Cinnamon Jim’s to sing before taking a break for some lunch.

Curling on Family Day
The Backx family celebrated Family Day at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre
with some family curling courtesy of the Municipality of Huron East. There were several groups
of varying skill levels on the ice that day taking in the municipality’s generosity. Trying his hand
at curling is Stein Backx, right, while, from left, Femke Backx, Ingrid Backx and Lotta Backx
