NEWS
FROM BRUSSELS
Local families face hard times
I definitely am a creature of habit.
Getting my head to do a column on
a Friday was just a little tough. It’s
Friday after all and other things
seemed to override sitting down and
thinking about the week past.
Life has a way of putting you in
your place. All you have to do is
look outside your home and be part
of another’s life for just a bit of time.
Without looking very far, incidents
in the past week have happened in
families that will affect them forever.
Death of a young person leaves
everyone in shock and then the
details of it start to slam. Another
family was given very poor odds
after testing for physical troubles
and there too is another family
coping with sadness and shock. The
mundane details of daily living are
turned upside down and thrown right
out when we deal with crisis in life.
So be kind to each other and respect
how people handle the daily stuff.
Only they know how fragile life can
be.
I was the recipient of a neat plate a
week or so ago as the time for
random acts of kindness
approached. The pretty plate was
covered with several different kinds
of cookies with a note that told me to
enjoy and then pass the plate along
with love and some type of goodie.
My plate came from Marg and
several other plates travelled from
the United Church in Auburn
spreading smiles and good tastes
over our area. I did what my note
said and sent on its way with muffins
and love and hope it continues its
journey as one of the many acts of
kindness that are experienced every
day.
Valentine’s Day was well
celebrated in Brussels. It’s placed in
the right part of the year. The let-
down after Christmas and the new
year with the continuation of cold
and snow gives Valentine’s Day the
chance to share joy and love
and food and flowers with
community. And as I said we
did it well – songs were sung and
flowers shared downtown and food
and love was shared. So the heart
decorations are done for another
year but in this house I like them too
much so they’ll stay up for another
week at least.
Take care of yourself.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

A NOTE FROM BETTY
By Jo-Ann McDonald
The week at the Brussels Legion
Branch began with a meeting on
Monday evening. The Dupont
Pioneer folks hosted an information
night on dealing with the grain
characterization work Pioneer is
doing to determine feeding
differences between corn hybrids in
swine production. The guest
speaker, Dan Jones from Des
Moines, Iowa, flew into London and
then arrived in the surprise
snowstorm in the area. The group
enjoyed pie and ice cream before
and after their meeting. Ladies
helping serve dessert were Jo-Ann
McDonald, Mabel Glanville and
Mary Bradshaw.
Our condolences to Comrade
George Adams on the passing of his
wife Maxine. Our sympathies to
their children and extended families.
Maxine had suffered a fall and had
broken her hip. She had surgery on
Saturday but passed away on
Sunday morning.
There were 10 darters on hand for
the Thursday darts. Winners were:
first, Deb Burch, Wayne Smith and
Sandra Josling; second, Roger
McHardy and Deb Caan; high shot,
Roger, 112; skunked twice, Gord
Jacklin and Kaye Smith - making
them the third and fourth skunks of
the year.
The Friday night supper of roast
beef was enjoyed by nearly 40
people. The next Friday meal will be
roast pork.
The wings, fries and meat draw
held on Saturday to celebrate
Valentine’s was enjoyed by a small
crowd. Many folk went home with
prizes. The cooks in th ekitchen
were Jo-Ann McDonald and Judy
Lee and the draws were managed by
Linda Bird.
The Cadets held their normal
meeting on Tuesday evening. They
had a special night dealing with
bullying. They learned how to
recognize and deal with such
situations.
The Cadets are still accepting pop
cans and returnable bottles for their
fundraising efforts. They meet
Tuesday evening, so would
appreciate donations to be there for
pickup by Tuesday. The Legion also
collects pop tabs for the wheelchair
program.
The Huron County Dairy
Producers held their annual meeting
at the Branch on Wednesday. They
met in the morning for a meeting
and then stopped to enjoy a roast
beef dinner served by the Branch.
They continued their meeting into
the afternoon. Helping the Branch
were Jo-Ann McDonald, Linda Bird,
Deb Caan, Daisy Schmidt, Greta
Zehr, Glenn and Jean Bridge and
Rick McDonald.
