SportsIronmen’s season ends with three straight losses
Suffering three straight defeats,
including a pair of 4-0 shutouts, the
Wingham Ironmen fell to the Mount
Forest Patriots, four games to two, in
their Western Junior C Hockey
League quarterfinal series.
Mount Forest evened the series at
two games apiece on Feb. 6, at the
Mount Forest and District
Community Centre by scoring a 4-0
decision over the Ironmen.
The Patriots did all the scoring in
the first period as Trevor Hughson,
Doug Ardis, Ben Davis and Dylan
Huffman found the range behind
Wingham netminder Keegan
Woodman.
Mount Forest outshot the Ironmen
49-46 and the Ironmen were 0-5 on
the power play.
Game five was scheduled for the
North Huron Wescast Community
Complex last Friday, but was
cancelled due to the weather. The
fifth game of the series was then
played last Saturday in Mount
Forest, with the Patriots scoring a 3-
2 decision to take a three-games-to-
two lead in the best-four-of-seven
series.
The teams were tied at one after
20 minutes of play and the score
remained the same until the third
period.
Nathan Woodard opened the
scoring for the Patriots, with Darren
Kerr netting the equalizer with an
unassisted marker.
Travis Donaldson sandwiched a
goal between Cody Wright and Ben
Davis of the Patriots. Aaron
Armstrong and Brett Brophy
assisted on Donaldson’s goal.
The Ironmen outshot the Patriots
38-31 and were 1-5 on the power
play.
Playing at home Sunday evening,
in a must win situation, the Ironmen
were shut out by the Patriots, 4-0.
The teams were deadlocked in a
scoreless draw after the opening
period, with Mount Forest taking a
2-0 lead in the second frame. The
Patriots added two more goals in the
third stanza.
Scoring for the Patriots were Dean
Nixon, Cody Wright, Dave Culliton
and Trevor Huffman. Ben Davis had
three assists and Culliton helped out
on two other goals.
Wingham outshot Mount Forest
33-26 and the Ironmen were 0-3 on
the power play.
Coach Russ Sutton said the key to
Mount Forest’s success was their
taking away the speed of the
Wingham players.
“They took our speed away from
us and any scoring opportunities,” he
said. “They trapped us up in the
neutral zone and it made it hard for
us to even get out of our end zone.”
He said they had good defensive
zone coverage in their end, but
Mount Forest made it hard to get to
their zone.
“They would slow us right up,”
said Sutton. “They took our speed
away, which is our asset and when
we finally did get in there they kept
us to the outside and the shots were
limited.”
“They did all the little things right.
They battled hard and in the end they
came out on top,”said the coach.
According to Sutton, Mount
Forest received solid goaltending
from Luke Bierworth. “He came up
big for them and in the end result,
they won the series,” he said.
Secondary scoring, or the lack of
it, was a downfall of the Ironmen.
“We couldn’t get that depth down
there and couldn’t get the guys to
touch the back of the net at all, so,
that’s the way it goes,” he said.
The coach said he was very
disappointed in the outcome of both
the game and the series.
“No one likes to lose, but at the
same time, they [Mount Forest])
worked a little bit [harder] to earn
their series win,” said Sutton. “All
the best to Mount Forest, and good
luck to them in their next series.”
Netminder Keegan Woodman said
the bounces were not going the
Ironmen’s way. “We tried hard, but
we didn’t come out on top,” he said.
“It was a successful year, I think, we
had a lot of fun and I know the boys
did too.”
He said Mount Forest was able to
capitalize on their chances.
The Ironmen awards banquet is
tentatively set for Saturday, April 6
at the Knights of Columbus Centre
in the North Huron Wescast
Community Complex.

One last gasp
