Weather makes for great chats
Weather has always been one of
the worldwide conversation starters.
In Canada we have the best
opportunity for lively exchange. Just
think how many times last week you
did that very thing – commenting on
the state of the outdoors. And it
seems this week is starting out with
another opportunity – oh yes, just a
little rain for February. On the bright
side, some of the ice that was stuck
on the ground has loosened and the
banks from the snowblowers have
decreased. Chat in Florida can’t top
that.
Olivia and Roger McHardy and
Jim and Leona Armstrong have
returned from Hong Kong and
Singapore and many spots in
between. Life is good on a cruise
ship and when another part of the
world is involved many great
memories are ready to be made. I’m
sure a good story or two is available
for the asking.
The morning for the Ministerial
Fund was a huge success. Last
Saturday was the result of an idea
planted by Cookie Morton and
tended by many in our community.
The baked items available for sale,
the offering of refreshments and an
opportunity to win prizes were all
taken seriously by the churches.
Donations and baked items wereextremely generous and the bankaccount is much better now, thanks
to our caring community.
Valentine’s Day at this house is a
national holiday – a fun day to
reflect on the people who are or have
been part of our life. Commerce
assists in the advertising so a gentle
reminder is all that is needed –
flowers, trips and food are always
welcome as a way to mark the day.
Of course it is my birthday, one I
share with brother Cliff in
Edmonton, so a party is an annual
event. So even as a child two cakes
were made and if Mom get her way,
a round cake got attached to a square
one and a nice heart shape was
produced. I seem to recall arguing
with Cliff about who owned which
cake, I was older so I won I’m sure.
Jack Cardiff and Ken Graber could
use a birthday kiss on the Feb. 14,
I’m sure. So be sure to find them.
Don’t let the long days of winter
get to you – call a friend, get out of
the house, visit someone. Your
mental health needs attention as well
as your physical wellbeing. Mental
issues are still up there with sex anddeath as uncomfortable subjects formany. So call someone who will
listen.
Take care of yourself.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

Weather cancels events

Happy Valentine’s Day from the
Branch and we hope that everyone
has the opportunity to spend time
with their loved ones. If you cannot
be there with them, be sure to make
a call. It can brighten a person’s day
to speak with family.
Activity was quiet around the
Brussels Legion Branch last week
because of the weather. The Cadet
Corp did not meet because of
stormy weather. They have a rule of
no school – no Cadet meeting.
The Thursday night darts had 10
darters taking aim at the boards.
Winners were: first, Wayne Smith
and Sharon Robbins; second, Roger
McHardy, Deb Caan and Sandra
Josling.
The Friday night supper was
cancelled due to the weather.
Hopefully next week, roast beef will
be served.
The Branch was represented at
District darts in Owen Sound on
Saturday. There were one team, one
pair for double darts and one single
in competition. Ron Schmidt had his
game on and was the winner of the
singles competition. He will
advance to Provincial competition in
Port Credit in March. Ron paired
with Dan Byersbergen for the
double competition and finished
about mid-pack for the day. The
team foursome was Ron and Dan
plus Bob Richardson and Ken Bird.
They enjoyed their day.
Congratulations to the four men on
their day and to Ron for his District
win.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had Jean Davidson and Bush
Whittard looking after the day.
There were nine tables of players.
Winners were: first, Ruth and
Shirley Gilders, 75; second, Cathy
and John Brown, 74; third, Betty
and Dianne, 72; lone hands, Charlie
Shaw and John Pollard, seven; low,
Glenn Bridge and Bruce Holtzer, 45.
The Sunday night dance had a
good crowd of almost 80 people
enjoy the music of the Country
Versatiles.
