Huron East Mayor Bernie
MacLellan says that while he was
saddened to hear that Brussels-based
business MDL Doors would not
rebuild, his attention is now focused
on the company’s former employees
and getting them working again.
With MDL being a privateenterprise, MacLellan said there’sobviously not much the municipality
can do, but if called upon to help, he
said, Huron East will do everything
that it can.
“There really isn’t much we have
control over,” MacLellan said. “It
was really heartbreaking to hear.
That’s another 100 jobs that we have
to find for our residents.”MacLellan said that themunicipality, if asked, will get
involved with MDL Doors and
Service Canada in retraining the
company’s former employees and
sending them back out into the
workforce.
He said that he hopes the
municipality can utilize the Brussels
Business and Cultural Centre, whereMDL Doors is currently workingand will spend its final days, as a
possible training facility for the
former employees.
“If we can get together with
Service Canada and bring in people
to train them, we wouldn’t have to
send these people all over the
country for training,” MacLellan
said. “It would be quicker
and cheaper for Service Canada
if they can all be trained in
Brussels.”
He said that while it was
“heartbreaking” to hear the news of
the closure, he understood where itcame from. He said that MDL Doorsclearly doesn’t have an obligation to
rebuild in Huron East and that it’s
unfortunate for a lot of residents
who worked there.
“I haven’t talked to the owners.
They clearly have a lot on their
plate,” MacLellan said. “If the time
comes and there’s anything we can
do to help the transition, we’d be
happy to help out and help find a
way to get these people back to
work.”

The School Within a University
program launched Friday, Feb. 1,
2013. Eligible students are selected
by school staff and must meet
criteria set by the school board and
the university to demonstrate that
they are academically capable.
The digitalCentral SHSM
program was approved by the
Ministry of Education in May of
2009 based on evidence of an
established program, strong
community and post-secondary
education partnerships, the delivery
of sector-recognized certifications
and a cooperative education
component.
digitalCentral promotes the
creation and production of
communications systems, computer
engineering, software and digital
media. ICT courses are the most
requested within the school.
Students pursuing a career in this
sector are well prepared for any
pathway they may choose.

of food safety across the province,
Nichols said. It’s not good enough to
expect a local processor to get easier
treatment. “When something goes
wrong [with food safety] it has a
ripple effect for everyone in the
industry.”
On the promotional side, OIMP is
supporting the Homegrown Ontario
branding program. It has also
sponsored prizes for the best meat
products. Metzger’s has won two of
these prizes, for its bacon and for its
Zesty Pork Burger.
Despite the challenges to her
members, Nichol said there are
opportunities to grow for her
members but everyone is going to
need to work together.
