Ironmen lead Mount Forest 2-1 in playoff action
After scoring a 5-1 decision over
the Mount Forest Patriots at the
Mount Forest and District
Community Centre on Saturday
evening, the Wingham Ironmen hold
a two games to one lead in the best
four of seven quarter-final series.
The Ironmen and the Patriots split
the first two games of the series
played at the North Huron Wescast
Community Complex on Jan. 30 and
last Friday.
Playing at home on Jan. 30, the
Ironmen needed overtime to score a
3-2 decision over the Patriots.
Rookie Derek Elliott scored the
winning goal at 4:43 of the overtime
period.
Following a scoreless first period,
Aaron Armstrong gave the Ironmen
a 1-0 lead in the second period, with
assists going to Joey Terwoord and
Elliott. Nathan Woodard tied the
score in the third period and Justin
Jacklin restored the one-goal
advantage with an unassisted
marker. Ben Davis netted the
equalizer for the Patriots.
The Ironmen outshot the Patriots
39-23 and were 1-4 on the power
play.
Despite a slow start to the game,
assistant coach Justin Murray said
the players stuck to the game plan.
“We didn’t score as many goals as
we wanted to, obviously, but we
worked hard and came out with the
‘W’,” he said. “That’s the main
thing.”
Murray is expecting a tough series
from the Patriots.
“We beat them six times during
the regular season, but that doesn’t
tell the tale come February,” he said.
“It’s whole new basket of headaches
right now.”
The Ironmen had a two-man
advantage in the first period, but
were unable to capitalize on the
manpower situation.
“We didn’t have our mind, maybe,
totally in sync right then when we
needed them the most,” he said. The
assistant coach said that netminder
Keegan Woodman stood on his head
and that he was there when the team
needed him the most. That’s why
there are six guys on the ice, he
noted.
Elliott said it was a pretty good
game all in all.
“They trapped us a lot, it was kind
of hard to get into their end and take
shots in the first period,” he said.
“We only had four or five shots, but
we started to play good solid
defensive hockey too and put the
puck in the net somehow.”
Elliott had no real play when he
skated down the wing and scored the
winning goal.
“I saw the defenceman backing in,
so like right, I’ll just tee it off and
hopefully it will beat the goalie and
go in and it hit the post and good
things happen in overtime,” he said.
Prior to the start of the game,
Captain Armstrong was presented
with three league trophies by league
Western Junior C Hockey League
convenor Steve Coulter of Brussels.
The three trophies were top scorer,
most valuable player and most
sportsminded player.
Armstrong said he felt pretty
blessed in winning the awards.
“I don’t think I deserve them, but
I’ve played with some amazing
players this year that have really
been amazing, “ he said. “I think
Drew Davidson definitely deserved a
couple of those awards for the
season he had over in Walkerton.”
“I’m just trying to take it in, but
really give the credit off to my
linemates and my teammates and
I’m very blessed,” he said.
The Ironmen captain said it was a
good game with a playoff-type
atmosphere.
“Both teams played really good
and I felt one odd-man rush the other
way could end it.” he said.
Despite scoring 11 seconds into
the game, on Friday evening, the
Ironmen were unable to maintain the
pressure and fell 4-3 to the Patriots.
The Patriots held a 2-1 advantage
after the opening 20 minutes and
were up 4-2 going to the third
period. Wingham tallied one goal in
the final period and applied pressure
in the final minutes, but were unable
to net the equalizer.
Armstrong had two goals and an
assist despite being closely guarded
by Dean Nixon. Elliott had a goal
and an assist. Drew Gross and
Darren Kerr received one assist
each.
Trevor Hughson scored two goals
for the Patriots.
The Ironmen outshot Mount
Forest 37-31 and were 1-5 on the
power play.
Coach Russ Sutton said the
Ironmen weren’t moving for the
puck in the game.
“We didn’t have that desire or the
jump until the last period,” he said.
“We started the third, but we didn’t
have that desire.”
The Ironmen got off to the quick
start but seemed to run out of gas,
according to the coach.
“We lost that emotion for the
game, the colour and desire,” he
said. “I think we were panicking a
little bit, a little nervous in the
second [period], we were second
guessing a little bit, but you saw
what desperation in the end there
that’s when we dug in.”
Assistant captain defenceman
Brett Brophy said the Ironmen were
outworked by the Patriots in the
game.
“We got to wake up in our own
end and fight for the puck,” he said,
“We have to come out better
prepared. All lines need to be going,
and I think we’re going to come out

The Wingham Golf and Curling
Club started the month of February
playing host to the Zone 14 mixed
curling bonspiel. The team of Blair
Willert from Exeter captured the A
championship with Mike Aprile’s
foursome representing Listowel
taking home the B side of the draw.
Shawn Cottrill from Belgrave was
part of the Listowel winning entry.
Both Exeter and Listowel moved on
to the regional playdowns to be held
in Dundas.
In regular curling action Mother
Nature was the big “winner” as
many of the leagues were forced to
be cancelled. The Monday daytime
winning teams were Stewart
Leedham, Bruce Robertson, Al
Webster, Clayt Ruppel, Mac Inglis
and Glenn McMichael. Monday
night men’s skips going home with
victories were Leedham and Bill
McDonald. The Wednesday night
mixed league saw the Robert Grein,
Scott Bridge, Wayne Horton and
Julie Hallahan teams come out on
top. Friday mixed winning skips
were Barry Simpson, Bill McDonald
and Murray Fear.
The F.E. Madill Secondary School
girls curling team of skip Kelsie
Eadie with Kara Eadie, Ashley
Forster and Stacey Hallahan was a
great representative of the club at the
Gore championships in Welland this
past weekend. Special thanks to
Preston Eadie who took on the
coaching duties for the girls.
This weekend Feb. 9 and 10, the
club is holding the annual
Sweetheart bonspiel while the ladies
bonspiel is on Saturday, Feb. 16.
Both of these spiels are still looking
for curlers.

Ironmen down Patriots 5-1
While the 5-1 win the Wingham Ironmen chalked up against Mount Forest may seem pretty
damning for the fifth seeded Patriots, the Ironmen are far from done with the series. With two
wins between them and the next leg of the playoffs, the team has to “wake up in [their] own
end and fight” according to Assistant captain Brett Brophy. (Jim Brown photo)
