Wow, did the snow come down! A
white and fluffy way to put the
world on hold. Radio stations, the
weather channel and Google
Weather were all busy spots as folks
made decisions about their plans for
each white day. A lot of activity was
put on hold until another time.
The school kids were pleased to
have a PA day as well as two snow
days in one week – very sweet. Now
for this grandparent on child duty
for the week, not so sure by Friday
night. We’ve all recovered nicely
and I noticed they napped as much
as I did.
Chris and Lara, along with Mark
and Trisha Barbour are returning
this week from checking out the
beaches of Cuba. It will be an extra
bonus for them to find the weather
they missed. Neighbours Greg and
Sue missed out on some of the
excess white stuff, but returned in
time to appreciate the differences in
weather that we know and love.
We’re sad here for the employees
of MDL Doors. Notice was given at
the end of the week that the plant
would not be rebuilt and so many of
our friends are out of work. I’m sure
it was hard for Mervin and Tillie but
tough decisions had to be made. So
be supportive of your neighbours.
The churches in our community
have a combined fund for
emergencies looked after by the
ministerial. If you can help this
fund, that would be great. An easyway for you to contribute would beto come to the Presbyterian Churchon Saturday morning from 10 a.m.
to noon, share a cup of tea and
donate to this fund. If you’re
inclined, baking is being accepted
Friday and early Saturday morning
for others to buy and then everybody
is happy – the baker, the buyer, the
ministers and finally the folks who
are in need of emergency funds. See
you on Saturday.
Friday was pretty stormy, so if
you meet up with Joyce Jacklin or
Joan Jacobs give them a late
birthday squeeze.
Don’t forget to organize/get your
goodies for Valentine’s Day, it’s
sneaking up fast.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

Abby Strome, left, and Jessica Clark, right, of North Woods Elementary School had a good
reason to smile last week as they were presented with awards for their performance in the
Royal Canadian Legion’s Remembrance Day Poster, Poem and Essay Contest. Strome
earned a second place finish in the junior black and white competition and Clark earned
second place in the junior colour poster contest. Youth Education Chairman Nanci Ducharme,
centre, made the presentation. (Denny Scott photo)

The Brussels Legion Branch held
its general meeting on Tuesday
evening. A meeting with Zone
Commander Andy Rogers
proceeded the meeting. The meeting
was to discuss the necessary
arrangements for hosting a Zone
Convention. Branch 218 will host
the spring convention on March 10.
There were seven Comrades present
for the meeting. The dates for
upcoming council meeting and
provincial convention were
received. Membership has 95 paid
members with a few still
outstanding. A new member, Peter
Gray was accepted into the
membership. A new part-time bar
steward has been hired. Mikaela
Minielly started and is doing well.
New flags have been purchased for
the flag poles. Public speaking has
been sent for Feb. 20 by Comrade
Nanci Ducharme. Entertainment is
arranged for the wings, fries and
meat draw evening on Feb. 16.
The Thursday night darts had a
dozen darters taking aim at the
boards. Winners were: first, Jim
Brown and Sandra Josling; second,
Ron and Daisy Schmidt; high shot,
Ron, 140; high start, men’s, Wayne
Smith, 140 and ladies’, Deb Burch,
70; second skunk of the season,
Sharon Robbins and Wayne Smith.
The Friday night supper was
cancelled due to the uncertainty of
the weather. This week will be roast
beef.
This week the Dominion
Command President Gordon Moore
announced the launch of a national
letter writing campaign to request
that the government improve the
funeral and burial benefits program
for veterans. Since 2004, the Legion
has requested the federal
government make some important
improvements to the Veterans’
Funeral and Burial Benefits
Program and are dismayed by their
inaction. As quoted by President
Moore “there should be no doubt
that the issues of adequate funeral
and burial support is an urgent issue
for Second World War and Korean
War Veterans. The majority of these
men and women are in their 90s and
approximately 2,000 pass on each
month.”
“Starting today, we are calling on
our approximately 330,000
members to send a letter to their
respective MPs highlighting the
need for government action to
improve the Funeral and Burial
Benefits program. All Canadians
who wish to support the efforts are
encouraged to do so by visiting the
website and downloading the RCL
letter at www.legion.ca/,” concluded
Mr. Moore.
We encourage all Comrades and
community members to be a part of
this campaign and to help those who
are in need of assistance. These
veterans were prepared to lay their
lives on the line for our country and
they deserve a dignified funeral. It is
the last and most fitting tribute we,
as Canadians, can provide for them.
