ACW wants community involved with hallContinued from page 16where volunteers would run the halland, at an estimated deficit of $300per year, would do so in a way that impressed council. “We were excited about that, and we will definitely help with that if it means keeping a hall in the community,” Millian said. However, he added, if the Foresters are in decline, that needs to be dealt with. Vanstone said that he was not a Forester and he’d prefer not getting mixed up between council and the Foresters. “I know the state that the building is in, I know what needs to be done and I know no one in the area will rent it for anything in the shape it is in,” he said. “I don’t know what the deal council made with the Foresters was, but I know that.” Millian said that the lack of volunteers was ‘disturbing’ and that not getting people from the community to step forward could be a real problem for the continued useof the hall.“If we’re going to keep runningthe hall, we have to look at how we are can rebuild not just the hall, but the support it has, because otherwise it will all fall apart,” he said. Vanstone said he would prefer to see the hall run by the township instead of a board, adding that a few people aren’t going to be able to raise funds for it. Council, however, felt that when they agreed to buy the building, it was supposed to be ‘business as usual’ and that the Foresters and volunteers would continue to run it. Van Diepenbeek felt that the community needs to get involved because, if they don’t, Benmiller will lose the second of two meeting spots in the village having just lost the Benmiller United Church directly across the road from the hall. “It’s fair to say that the township will help people who help themselves,” Millian added. “But ifthere is no desire, we can’t run thehall at a loss.”Vanstone said that the boardwould do some ‘soul-searching’ andseveral councillors suggested bringing the Foresters back in to seewhat could be done with thebuilding. No action was taken.
