By Selina Schuit Junior Farmers is an organization for youth and is run by youth from ages 15 to 29 (as of Jan. 1). The focus is on developing youth across Ontario to become leaders and volunteers in their community. Even with community projects and meetings, Junior Farmers is one of the greatest social groups in Ontario. Where else can you meet other youth from across Ontario, compete against them in volleyball, square dancing or in a blind wheelbarrow race? One of our upcoming events in March Conference at the Ramada Inn, London. The event is held annually switching from east and west in Ontario using Guelph as the centre point. The event this year is being held from March 8 - 10. The theme at March Conference is “Just Say Yes”. At March Conference the group has a provincial directors’ meeting which is one representative from each club and the executive discuss the business locally from each club and provincially. On Friday, there are international and inter-provincial interviews in the morning. This year the group is offering nine exchanges from Prince Edward Island to the United Kingdom to Germany. In the evening, they will be having the annual general meeting discussing policies, new nominations for executive and meeting other members across the province. On Saturday and Sunday, there will be motivational speakers about saying yes to every opportunity because you never know where it might take you. Daniel Steep will be teaching about agriculture using comedy, music and illusions. Why not try your hand at Go for the Gold – Junior Farmer’s style where we will have questions regarding cash crops, dairy and the group’s showcasing members’ talents in synchronized swimming. Saturday afternoon, they will be picking the 2013 provincial charity. The 2012 charity was Farm and Food Care and members raised awareness to the local community and provincially for this non-profit organization. Saturday evening there is a banquet and dance honouring past executive, alumni and showcasing talents through scrapbooks, new articles and outstanding members. Just say yes to March Conference this year.
