Brussels shows support for firefighters during blaze
The lives of many were changed
drastically this past week with the
fire at MDL Doors manufacturing
plant. The family-owned operation
since 1983 employed over 100
people, who now are wondering
what the future holds. The Lichty
family will have some difficult
decisions to make and the shock of
the destruction of the 60,000-foot
facility will be devastating but
relieved there were no injuries or
loss of life. The many firefighters of
at least four area departments battlednot only the fire but the freezing coldelements. They are to becommended for their dedication totheir jobs. The people of Brussels
rose to the plea for food and coffee
and the men were overwhelmed with
the outpouring generosity of the
people. We hope that the many
issues to be resolved happen quickly
and folks can plan for their future.
Jim and Sheila Thompson and
family had a few days holidays in
the Beaverton area last weekend.
The families of Cheryl and Matt
Lee, Will and Liandra Thompson
and Lisa and Greg had a blast ice
fishing. They report awesome
weather both Saturday and Sunday
and they caught between 70 and 80
fish, of course, not all were keepers.
The youngest of the group, Sheldon
Lee, caught the biggest perch of the
outing.
The snow of last week brought out
the snowmobiler enthusiasts by thedroves. We can see the trail from ourhome and one machine to groups offour to eight machines made the bestof the trails on Saturday and Sunday.
It was a good thing they were out,
because the rain of Monday and
maybe the rest of the week, will put
a damper on further fun for awhile.
Members of Duff’s United Church
had Patty Banks in charge of the
service. Greeting the members was
myself, Jo-Ann McDonald, who was
late, but shook hands with all in their
seats. The Walton band played
during the service. Band members
include Glenda Morrison, Marie
McGavin, Marion Godkin, Phyllis
Mitchell, Sean Mitchell, Pearl
McCallum and Graeme Craig. Patty
was assisted with the service by
Heidi McClure and Karen Hoegy.
Patty’s reflection was about
depression and she reflected her
own personal realities of dealing
with this rarely talked aboutcondition. She offered quotes fromfamous people like “the purpose oflife is to be happy” by the DalaiLama. She offered solutions she had
researched for people to help cope
with the blues – understanding,
compassion and support for those
suffering. The service was
interjected with humorous notes and
interjections. The members enjoyed
a delicious luncheon of soup and
sandwiches provided by Phyllis,
Marie, Betty McCallum and Patty.
Announcements included that the
annual reports are available
downstairs and help delivering them
to folks is appreciated. There will be
a joint confirmation with Walton,
Bluevale, Belgrave and Blyth and
the contact is Rev. Peter. Families
wishing to have children baptized
are also asked to contact Peter.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week include Scott Bromley, Brenda
McIntosh, Ryan Jacklin, TommyParr, Sheldon Lee, Alexis Beuerman,Chris Ryan, Michael Gill, MarkWilbee, Carali Hugill. Happybirthday to all. By Jo-Ann

PEOPLE AROUNDWALTON
NEWS
FROM WALTONLocal families enjoy holidays from winter
The area has experienced the
highs and lows of winter this past
week. The early days of the week
had very low temperatures, down to
-26°C one night and the cold
blustery winds and snow to cancel
schools on Tuesday. Then the week
progressed and the temperatures
started to rise, the sun shone and the
winds subsided and we had a
beautiful weekend. The joy of living
in midwestern Ontario is that we
have an ever-changing cycle of
weather.
Congratulations to all the families
who have had new babies this
month. Grandparents for the third
time and welcoming a grandson are
Joan and Neil Beuermann. Happy
parents are Josh and Patricia and are
very excited about the arrival of
Canon Daniel. Joan wonders if the
town is ready for another
“Beuermann boy”.
Howard and Joan Bernard have
welcomed two little great-
granddaughters this month.
Granddaughter Amber welcomed a
little girl named Nina and
granddaughter Shalin welcomed a
girl named Allanna. The family is
growing by leaps and bounds.
We hear that Helen Williamson is
now a resident at the Seaforth
Manor. We hope she is adjusting to
her new surroundings. Viola Traviss
is also a resident at the Manor now.
We hope she is rekindling new
friendships with many other Walton
folks. Irma Williamson is back to
Huronlea as a resident. She has
moved from her apartment to other
accommodations. I met Anne
Williamson on the street and she is
coming along, but not as fast as she
would like.
Michael Craig had a great Sunday,
as he had the opportunity to travel to
London. He was with the
Community Living Group and they
went to see the Disney On Ice Show.
Reports are that it is a wonderful
show.
Neil and Marie McGavin have
been busy these past weeks since
Christmas. They spent a week in
Collingwood at the Georgian Manor.
They spent time relaxing and
visiting. Neil went skiing and
Heather and her children from North
Bay arrived for a couple of days of
skiing.
Pat and Cathy Melady spent a
week in El Salvador and Neil and
Marie spent that week house sitting.
They had a good time and Marie
provided food and treats for whoever
was there.
There was a large group of folks
who travelled to Alberta for a winter
wedding. Congratulations to Kyle
McNichol and Allison Beuerman
who were married in Canmore on
Jan. 19. Kyle is the son of Jim and
Danica McNichol, Seaforth and
Allison the daughter of Glenn and
Marilyn Beuerman, Walton. There
were 100 guests at the wedding and
the majority were from Ontario.
Reports are that a Chinook blew in
for the festivities and the
temperatures allowed the guests to
enjoy a beautiful day in Canmore.
Walton area guests included Jim and
Linda McDonald, whose son
Andrew was in the wedding party. A
former Walton boy, Darcy
McCutcheon, now of Edmonton,
was also in the wedding party. Brad
and Christine Knight attended and
had a great time. They spent a day
visiting with Christine’s son Jamie
in Red Deer. The McDonalds and
Knights spent a day sightseeing in
the mountains and it was beautiful.
Chris and Erin (Beuerman) Blake,
Foster and Mason, from Walton
made the trip west for sister
Allison’s special day.
The Finlayson girls had a special
week away together with their
husbands last week. Sharon and
Brad Carnochan, Shelley and Brian
McGavin, SueAnn and Ed Van
Miltenberg and Sandra and Doug
Dietz spent five days in Las Vegas. It
was hot and they enjoyed a very
special time together.
Neil McGavin has returned from a
week away winter camping. The
group of 12 spent a week near
Hawkesville near Algonquin Park.
They went snowshoeing, cross
country skiing and skiing. The group
is a very diverse group of friends
made by Neil through his years with
the Plowing Match contacts.
There were doctors, lawyers,
counsellors, farm equipment dealers
and others from many walks of life.
The men enjoyed their cabins that
even had saunas! Welcome back
Neil.
Our condolences to the Pollard
family on the passing of Ken
Pollard. He will be missed by the
many members of his family. Ken
had settled in Monkton area after
leaving the Walton area. The Pollard
farm was on the southwest corner of
St. Michael’s Rd. the former 14th
concession.
The Cranbrook dart club always
has an exciting evening at darts.
They had 18 people brave the cold
weather to enjoy the darts and the
company. The new players are
playing very well and it is still a
game of luck for many. The players
are divided into teams and team
eight, who shall remain a mystery,
found themselves skunked in one
game. Teuni Smith was very lucky
ending a game on the bullseye (50)
which was needed to get out.
Amazing! Teuni also captured the
high score of 101 for the ladies and
Ern Lewington had a high shot of
125. There were a few others who
also had a good night having shots
over 100.
Returning from a week’s vacation
in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
are Steve and Marni Knight and
Scott and Kendra Cardiff. They had
great weather, in the 30s every day,
so returning to
-26°C was quite a shock to the
system. The two men went on a four-
wheeler excursion and went to tour a
cigar factory. The “factory” was a
one-man operation in a hut.
