School fair board prepping for ambassador contestThe Elementary School Fair Board
had its first meeting of the new year
on Jan. 24 and Board Chair Steven
Hallahan said the group has some
big projects ahead of them.
“We’re just putting some ideas
together for what we’re going to do
this year,” he said. “We’re getting
the logo contest together in March,
deciding how to handle the
ambassador contest in April and,
after that, it’s just going to be putting
some advertising together for the fair
program and discussing corporatesponsors for donations.”Hallahan said that there wereapproximately 15 members of the
board at the meeting including some
new members, but that the group is
always looking for more.
“We’re still looking for volunteers
to come and help out for the fair and
for the work beforehand,” he said.
“But I think that once we get the
sponsors together we will just have
to do what we did last year, so it
should work out well.”
This year’s fair stands to be one of
the most well-attended in recent
history, according to Hallahan, whosaid that the inclusion of studentsfrom the previous Wingham andTurnberry Central Public Schools
will open the event to new
participants.
“We’re hoping for another good
year and, as Alice McDowell
[Principal of Maitland River
Elementary School in Wingham]
told us at the meeting, between the
Grade 7s and 8s at the high school
and the two Maitland River
Elementary Campuses, there will be
about 600 eligible students for the
event,” he said. “We’re hoping more
Wingham and Turnberry studentswho haven’t been in before willcome out and join in.McDowell was joined by Avon-
Maitland District School Board
Chair Colleen Schenk representing
the school and Hallahan said that
both were excited to be involved.
“If the chair of the school board
and the principal are in favour of it
and want to see more participants,
that can only be a good thing,” he
said.
The Annual Elementary School
Fair, formerly known as the
Belgrave, Blyth and Brussels School
fair, has, for nearly a century,
highlighted the achievements of
students in agriculture-related
endeavours.
This year will be the 93rd
installment of the fair and students
from all local schools are invited to
attend and compete.
