dies in collision
MDL Doors sets up at former Brussels school
A true battle
As fire raged at MDL Doors outside of Brussels, a large perimeter was set up to allow
firefighters to do their job and subdue the fire. Here, from a distance, is a view of the
blaze in its final hours. For a video of the fire, courtesy of Rob Miller of Brussels, visit

The office won’t be the same
Kathy Haehnel, Manager of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food
and Rural Affairs’ West Region Rural Economic Development Branch,
left, said the office won’t be the same without Jane Muegge, the
Agriculture and Rural Economic Development Advisor in the office.
Muegge retired last week and celebrated the occasion with a party at
the Clinton Legion. (Denny Scott photo)

From the business’s side of
things, MDL Doors was set
up with a skeleton staff at the
Brussels Business and
Cultural Centre (the former
Brussels Public School) the
same day of the fire.
While the company is
refusing to make any
statements to the media for
the time being, a press release
was issued Thursday, Jan. 24,
one day after the fire.
“Employees at MDL Doors
in Brussels will know moreabout their future in thecoming days,” the release.
“The fire yesterday destroyed
most of the manufacturing
plant and the office. There
were no injuries, and damages
are expected to be in the
millions. A warehouse and
some office facilities housed
in different buildings were not
damaged. The cause remains
unknown.
“MDL Doors president and
founder Mervin Lichty says
they have set up a temporary
facility in the Brussels
Business and Cultural Centre, which is the old BrusselsPublic School. Employees
will be contacted in the next
few days with a status
update.”
Huron East Economic
Development Officer Jan
Hawley said that she, along
with Huron East Chief
Administrative Officer Brad
Knight, were on the scene
early, offering any possible
help to the MDL Doors in the
wake of the fire.
Hawley was
instrumental in the
move to the Brussels Businessand Cultural Centre whileKnight was on hand to offer
any kind of help that the
municipality could provide.
Hawley said that while the
phone system was a bit of a
mess during the first day and
employees were using their
cell phones to make calls,
Tuckersmith Communica-
tions was at the centre almost
immediately and the business
was set up and connected to
the internet within two hours,Hawley said.“Right now they’re just
swamped trying to get
everything organized,”
Hawley said. “We’re here if
they need us.”
She said that she, along
with MDL Doors
representatives, were
impressed with the response
of the community and the
willingness to help out that
was presented in the wake of
the fire.“I’ve been overwhelmed bythe support,” Hawley said.
“That’s just a credit to this
great community.”
In addition to the
community and the
municipality, Hawley also
said that competing
businesses were also quick to
offer their help to MDL
Doors, offering whatever they
could to help the business get
back on its feet.
A major collision resulted in the death
of one man and closed County Road 25 on
Tuesday, Jan. 22 shortly after
11:15 a.m.
Huron County OPP officers were
dispatched to a serious three vehicle
collision on Blyth Road (Huron County
Road 25), west of Cemetery Line (west of
Blyth).
Investigation revealed that a minivan in
the westbound lane on Blyth Road was
struck from behind by a westbound full
sized livestock transport truck. The impact
forced the minivan into the eastbound
lane, where it was struck by an eastbound
dump truck. At the time of the collision it
was snowing hard and visibility was
extremely poor.
The male driver of the minivan, Wilmer
Glousher, 85, of North Huron was
pronounced deceased at the scene. Neither
truck driver sustained any injuries as a
result of this collision.
West Region OPP Technical Traffic
Collision Investigators are on the scene
and are continuing their investigation into
this crash.
Blyth Road between London Rd and
Currie Line was closed until
approximately 9:30 p.m. that night to
allow for the safe investigation and
removal of the vehicles.
