After much discussion in the last
half of 2012 about changing
meeting times, Central Huron
finalized a schedule of meeting
dates that will come into effect next
month.
The decision was made at
council’s Jan. 7 meeting.
Council will be moving to two
council meetings, as opposed to
one, which will be held on the first
and third Tuesdays of the month.
February’s meetings will be held on
Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. and
Tuesday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m.
Central Huron Council will
continue its Committee of the
Whole meetings, which will be
held on the second Tuesday of the
month at 1 p.m. The February
Committee of the Whole meeting
will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at
1 p.m.
The Committee of the Whole
meeting had traditionally been held
on the final Thursday of the
month.
New potential dates for meetings
had been discussed extensively last
year as councillors felt a second
council meeting was necessary for
a whole host of reasons, including
approval of motions later in the
month.
***
A wind energy opposition
summit, hosted by the Municipality
of Wainfleet, will be held sometime
this month.
Central Huron Against Turbines
(CHAT) sent council a letter
regarding the summit. At the Jan. 7
meeting Councillors Alex
Westerhout, Burkhard Metzger,
Marg Anderson and Brian Barnim
expressed interest in attending the
summit.
***
Central Huron approved
supporting a risk management
component of the municipality’s
bid for the 2014 Ontario ParaSport
Games.
Some councillors were
concerned with the open-ended
nature of the motion with no
definitive bottom line. Genny
Smith of the Central Huron BIA
said the whole bidding process has
a budget of $186,000.
***
Council authorized an increase of
all rental fees for the Auburn Hall
by $5.
***
Council passed a motion advising
the Avon Maitland District School
Board that the municipality has no
interest in the Holmesville Public
School property.

County approves
over-65 policy
A policy to look after employees
after they reach 65 was barely
passed by Huron County Council at
its late December Committee of the
Whole meeting.
Interim Chief Administrative
Officer Heather Adams brought a
recommendation forward after it
was brought to her attention that
non-union full-time employees with
the county have their health benefits
cut in half when they reach 65 and
completely eliminated when they
reach 70. It was suggested that the
employees receive an hourly, in-lieu
payment to replace the lack of health
coverage and benefits.
Adams suggested that employees
between the ages of 65 and 69
receive an additional 75 cents per
hour in lieu of their lost coverage,
similar to the county’s part-time
employees, who do not have
benefits. When the employee
reaches 70, that amount would rise
to $1.50.
Several councillors spoke against
the move, saying there is a definite
difference between part-time and
full-time employees.
Central Huron’s Dave Jewitt said
that while there wouldn’t be an
additional cost on the benefit side,
there would be on the payroll side
and it simply wasn’t a change that he
could support.
Goderich’s Deb Shewfelt asked if
the county even had any employees
who are over 70 and Adams said
there currently is one.
Bluewater’s Paul Klopp sided with
Jewitt, saying that the cut in benefits
has always been a bit of a nudge to
retirement for some of the older
