Wingham Ironmen jump ahead of Hawks temporarily
The Wingham Ironmen
temporarily moved into third place
on Friday evening after defeating the
Mount Forest Patriots 5-2 in Western
Junior C Hockey League action at
the North Huron Wescast
Community Complex.
The Ironmen moved one point in
front of the Mitchell Hawks, with
two games remaining. The Hawks
have three games remaining.
Aaron Armstrong continues to add
to his league record points total as he
collected a goal and three assists to
raise his point total to 119. Derek
Elliott had three goals and Drew
Gross chipped in with one goal.
Travis Donaldson picked up two
assists and single helpers were
received by Cole Pellett and Steve
Kerr. Ben Davis and Tyler
McCracken replied for the Patriots.
The Ironmen trailed 2-1 after the
opening 20 minutes but held a 4-2
advantage going into the third
period. Wingham outshot Mount
Forest 32-25 and was 1-5 on the
power play.
The Ironmen got off to a slow start
in the game and coach Russ Sutton
said perhaps the players were not
mentally prepared for the start of the
game.
“All in all the guys got better as the
game went on,” he said.
The coach said netminder Keegan
Woodman was the reason the
Ironmen were able to stay close to
the Patriots in the first period.
“Keegan’s the reason why we were
able to stay in the game and keep
within one goal and he was able to
give us a chance to win that game,”
he said. “He was a big part of that
and got us rolling.”
He agreed captain Aaron
Armstrong keeps rolling along. “He
keeps chipping away. He’s a smart
hockey player and works hard and
he’s in the right spot at the right
time,” said Sutton.
Forward Evan Ducharme said the
game went well although the team
started out slow.
“We began picking it up as the
game went on,” he said. “Sometimes
we have to because the playoffs are
right around the corner.”
He said it looks like Mount Forest
is the team the Ironmen will meet in
the playoffs.
“We beat them six times in the
regular season but we just can’t let
up and we have to keep going
hard and finish them early and move
onto the second round,” said
Ducharme.
The Brussels native said the game
was getting chippy towards the end.
“That’s just the way it is. You have
to stay out of it and try your best to
avoid it as much as you can because
you don’t want to get sucked into it
and hurt your team,” he said.
The Ironmen conclude the regular
season this weekend with a pair of
games. They host the Goderich
Sailors on Friday beginning at
7:30 p.m. at the North Huron
Wescast Community Complex and
then travel to Walkerton on Saturday
for a 6:30 p.m. contest against the
Hawks.

The Wingham Ironmen are a step behind the Mitchell Hawks for third place in the WJCHL
standings. With only two games to go to Mitchell’s three, the Ironmen are three points behind
the Hawks due to Mitchell’s three overtime losses. Both teams have chalked up the same
amount of wins throughout the season. Over the weekend, the Ironmen were ahead of Hawks,
however Mitchell won games on Saturday and Sunday to regain their position. (Jim Brown photo)
Skips and Stones
– By Bruce Skinn
On Saturday, Jan. 19 the Wingham
Golf and Curling Club kicked off the
2013 bonspiel season with the
Country mixed Bonspiel. Organizers
Marg Moffatt and Ross Peacock did
a fantastic job putting the 16 teams in
place that made for some great fun
and curling action. The Jason
Beirling rink from the Clinton area
squeaked out an extra end victory
over the Leanne Marks foursome in
the first draw.
The second draw saw the Marvin
Cook team curl themselves to a
victory over the Glenn McMichael
group.
In regular league curling action the
Monday daytime curlers winning
skips were Bruce Robertson, Bill
Tolton, Barry Simpson, Bob
Johnston, Clayt Ruppel and Mac
Inglis. The Tuesday night ladies
skips taking home wins were Emily
Elston, Amy Miller and Sue Fair.
Earl Fitch and Jim Ross led their
teams to victory in the Tuesday
competitive league.
On Wednesday, Jan. 16 the mixed

Bridge, Wayne Horton and Julie
Hallahan. The Thursday daytime

Lakers take international gold
The Huron Perth Lakers Major
Atom “AAA” team won the Preston

Championship over the weekend.
Local boys, Dakota Coultes and
Mason Weber, both of Belgrave, are
members of the team.
They worked hard to win against
the Wheatfield Blades, Don Mills
Flyers, Lambton Jr. Sting and
