This week, the Kindergarten students have been concentrating on the book Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? learning how to chime in with their part and matching printed colour words with printed animal words. Students have been attempting to learn colour words so that they are recognized as sight words. The class wrote all about the activities students participated in during the winter holiday. They have been reviewing the letters learned to date and singing songs about the letter “H”. They have been working with the number four and playing many games to help them understand how it can be broken down into smaller units. They have been making simple addition and subtraction sentences using number facts to four. Grade 1 had a “50 books” reading party on Friday. Everyone has now read 50 (or more) books in the home reading program. The celebration included lots of electronic reading activities – exploring word games on the Smartboard; reading, listening and fitting word puzzles together on iPads and reading and listening to stories on netbooks. Everyone had a chance to spend some time reading big books as well and the final party activity was munching popcorn and guzzling juice. The Grade 2/3 students are working on the features of non- fiction. Students are using big books and working in groups. We continue to work on bullying and understanding how leaving someone out of the group is also considered to be bullying. By Colton Rodger This week at Hullett Central Public School the Grade 7/8 students were put to the test. They had a science test on pure substances and mixtures. In math the class is coming to the end of the first chapter on integers, (positive and negative numbers). Friday the class divided up and they did three Reader’s Theatre plays. In the Grade 7 class, students were creating toothpick chairs to demonstrate the science differences between frames, solids and shell structures. The class is also working on a health assignment where they are studying and researching the pros of cardiovascular fitness. The class also completed an assignment about European explorers. Hullett students are happy that Mrs. Barnett is running a band on Wednesday mornings. They would also all like to thank Crystal Whyte and Janet Westerhout for coaching the girls’ and boys’ volleyball teams. By Morgan Howson Last Wednesday I interviewed Jane Goodall at Hullett School. Mrs. Goodall lives in the Londesborough area and is the community representative for Hullett Central Public School Council. Mrs. Goodall grew up in England but married a Canadian. Her two sons, Robert (28) and Matthew (25), both attended Hullett Central PublicSchool but now work forBombardier in Thunder Bay.When Mrs. Goodall’s children were in school she was a parent volunteer and enjoyed helping out that way. Now that her children are grown she has found that serving as a community representative to the school council is an excellent way to continue to do her bit. She claims that it is very satisfying to seeeveryone working together for thesake of the students. She feels thatbecause the community has an opportunity to be involved in the school this way, there are fewer issues because things are set in place to allow issues to come forward to be resolved if they come up. Mrs. Goodall is hopeful that Sympathy is extended to Lavern and Joan Clark and family on the death of Lavern’s father, Lyle Clark of Highgate, Ontario on Thursday, Jan. 17. Happy birthday to Mary Rouw, Gerald Kerr and Jessica Sparling who celebrate Jan. 24; Fred Hakkers, Jan. 27; Alvin Wallace, Jan. 28 and Doug Howson, Jan. 31. Don’t forget the Legion pancake breakfast on Jan. 27 at the Legion Hall starting at 8:30 a.m. Please note the change in location. THE EDITOR, Re: New Nativity Scene Thank you to all who made this decision and helped fund or make the new nativity scene happen – for replacing the one that had perhaps been vandalized last year. I am aware that some towns are afraid of portraying anything overtly Christian on public property. I’m proud to live in Blyth and applaud your brave stand in this matter. Sincerely, Yvonne Dow. (J.R. Miller) “Shall we indeed accept good from God--and shall we not accept adversity?” Job 2:10 Shall we trust our Father only when our lives are filled with pleasant things--and then not trust Him also when a shadow falls over our hearts? Do you think that God is good--only when He makes all things please you? Our call is to trust God at all times--whether good or bad. For even if sorrow should enter our home, He is able, even in the midst of sorrow, to make our home- life sweeter, purer, and more Christ-like. If we trust in God, then the shadow will be as rich a blessing to us as the light; and the sorrow will be steps upward, on which our feet may climb Heavenward! “We know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28 “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
