A soon-to-be refurbished town hall
North Huron Township Council and staff gathered together on Friday last week to receive the
announcement that the Federal Government’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund
would be picking up half the cost of renovating the township’s town hall, which has been
pushed off of the budget each year since amalgamation due to more pressing issues. Shown
are, from left, Councillor Ray Hallahan, Councillor Bernie Bailey, Huron-Bruce MP Ben Lobb

Reeve David Riach. (Denny Scott photo)

shaved.
The event was organized in
honour of Shirley Veenendaal,
Program Director, Emergency
Services for HPHA and Site Leader
for St. Marys Memorial Hospital
after her diagnosis of colon
cancer. Many staff members across
the Alliance banded together to
create something positive and to
show support to all battling
cancer. Organizers Janet van Koot,
Cheryl Long and Angela Wettlaufer
were on hand all day to welcome
everyone and ensure a
fun-filled event. They expect the
total to go even higher as more
donations come in during the next
few weeks.
The event saw many children
participate – some whole hockey
teams! Many staff sported new blue
hairstyles, and some brave enough
had their whole head shaved,
including CEO Andrew Williams
(along with dying his goatee blue!).
Stephanie Untucht was one of the
first to go bald – and raised over
$2,000!
“The funds raised from this event
will go a long way to supporting the
Canadian Cancer Society in the
research and support services it
funds”, said Janis Cunningham,
Canadian Cancer Society Huron-
Perth Manager. “What an excellent
fun way to gather people together to
fight back against cancer. You could
certainly sense the camaraderie,
enthusiasm and spirit of all who
attended.”

projects.
“It may not seem like a lot, but
$125,000 is a three to four per cent
increase for a township like North
Huron,” he said. “It really lightens
the load and, in the grand scheme of
thing, really helps out.”
Pat Newson, director of facilities
for North Huron, explained that the
project includes work on the exterior
of the building, the doors, masonry
and more improvements to mirror
the improvements made to
Josephine Street last year.
“The changes to one of our
flagship buildings will help people
notice it,” she said. “We have a lot of
business through the building and
we want to keep the look of the
heritage building fresh.”
Jonathan VanCamp, President of
the Belgrave Community Centre
board said that their $70,000 project
includes renovations to the fire
systems, sprinkler systems and
evacuation exits.
Other projects that were also
awarded funding included the Betty
Cardno Centre in Central Huron and
the Brussels Public Library in Huron
East.

The evening’s guest speaker was
Neil McGavin, who mostly had fun
with the group, but did take time to
reflect back on the decades he and
his family have spent working
alongside farmers in Huron
County.
In thanks for having McGavin
speak at the event, the
Beef Producers made a donation
to 4-H Huron County on his
behalf.
