Armstrong breaks point record with 3 games leftAaron Armstrong broke the Western Junior C Hockey League’s individual point total Saturday evening at the North Huron Wescast Community Complex. The Wingham Ironmen captain had two goals and an assist as the Ironmen defeated the Hanover Barons 6-2 to raise his season point total to 115 points. He has three games remaining to add to it. Armstrong moved to within a point of the record of 113 points on Friday evening as he scored two goals and added a pair of assists as the Ironmen fell 5-4 to the Kincardine Bulldogs at the Davidson Centre in Kincardine. Following the game on Saturday Western Junior C Hockey League convenor Steve Coulter of Brussels made a presentation to Armstrong on behalf of the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA). Also on hand for the presentation were the only other players to score 100 points in a season, Terry Whitehead and Dave Hopkins of the Barons. When asked how it felt to break the record of 113 points held by Hopkins, Armstrong said, “It feels good, but I couldn’t have done without my teammates. I really owe all the credit to them. I’m playing with some great players this year.” He noted they were the best group of guys he has ever played with. Armstrong didn’t think Hanover was paying extra attention to him but said he just got off to a slow start in the game. “It was a slow start and I couldn’t get anything going, but I got some nice passes there from Brophy [defenceman Brett] and Elliott [forward Derek] and that really helped me out,” he said. “I owe it to those guys, they did all the work.” The game became chippy in the third period, when the Ironmen started to pull ahead, and Armstrong thought that the Barons became frustrated because this was the lastgame the two teams played eachother during the regular season. “Anything that people wanted to get out of the way got out of the way in the last couple of minutes of the game,” he said. According to Armstrong, Hanover was focused on other players throughout the game, rather than him. “They were focused on some other guys too and maybe our 16-year-old Derek Elliott who’s having a great season, I think they were keeping a close eye on him,” he said. Elliott had a goal and an assist Saturday and Brophy collected a pair of assists. Also scoring for Wingham were Travis Donaldson, Blair Goss and Evan Ducharme. Brayden Pellett and Justin Jacklin received an assist apiece. Wingham held a 2-0 lead after the first period and took a 3-2 advantage into the third period. The Ironmen outshot the Barons 29-28 and were 1-6 on the power play. Coach Russ Sutton said it was a good game on Saturday. “They started slow, the second period was scary a little bit, but they started skating and playing a little more physical in the third period, which in the end result we got a win out of it,” he said. The Ironmen’s recently acquired netminder, Jaden Shrier, from the Goderich Sailors, in a trade for Ben Errington, started in goal and collected the win. “I thought he played well, he came out and played the puck for us, made the big save when he had to and all- in-all he was square and played well overall,” said Sutton. The coach said there has been some tension between the two clubs and this was the fifth game that Wingham had won so the Barons were getting frustrated at the end of the game. “They kind of put it to us in the second period and the (final) result was not what they wanted it to be,” he said. Alex Kuntz scored both goals for Hanover. Elliott had a goal and two assists on Friday and Joey Terwoord chipped in with a goal. Goss picked up one assist. Garrett Simmons had two goals for Kincardine. Each team had 38 shots on net and the Ironmen were 1-11 on the power play. The Ironmen have a single game this weekend. They host the Mount Forest Patriots at the North Huron Wescast Community Complex, beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. By Jim BrownThe Citizen Armstrong sets new record In what could be seen as providence, Wingham Ironmen Captain Aaron Armstrong, shown here signing autographs for his fans, broke the Western Jr. C Hockey League single season point record previously held by Dave Hopkins of the Hanover Barons during a game against the Barons over the weekend. The Ironmen trumped the Barons 6-2 as Armstrong bypassed the record of 113 points and is currently sitting at 115 points with three games remaining in the season. Armstrong has earned 46 goals and 69 assists this season. (Jim Brown photo) Nearing the end With a 6-2 win over the Hanover Barons on the weekend, the Ironmen are within one point of the third place Mitchell Hawks. Unfortunately, Mitchell has five games left to the Ironmen’s three, including three against lower-seeded teams. The Ironmen will take to the ice this weekend in Wingham against the fifth-seeded Mount Forest Patriots. (Jim Brown photo) Stormwater plans an issue in development of former Seaforth school Huron East Council refused to decide one way or the other on the $125,000 contribution to developer Brian Barnim and his project at the former site of Seaforth Public School at their Jan. 8 meeting. Barnim, who was at the Jan. 8 meeting, said that there would be significant meetings in the next month and a half and that a solution would no doubt be reached (or at least be close) by council’s first meeting in March. Barnim said the meetings would involve him and his legal counsel, as well as an engineer and the municipality’s engineer in hopes that a solution would be reached. Councillor Bill Siemon was curious as to what could be accomplished, because he said that if there is no meeting of the minds between the two sides, they’ll be right back where they began. He said it would be pointless to have any meeting without both engineers and Barnim agreed. Barnim said the discussion has generally surrounded a pond for stormwater management that was proposed by the municipality’s engineer. It comes down to whether stormwater management concerns can be addressed or not without the large added-on cost of a pond construction. A motion to table a decision on the $125,000 contribution to the construction of Robert Street by Huron East was then tabled until council’s first meeting in March, which will be Tuesday, March 5 at 7 p.m. in Seaforth, for further discussion and a decision.
