Brian and Reta Potter greeted
worshippers and handed out the
service of worship at Knox United
Church on Sunday, Jan. 6. Rev. Tom
Murray welcomed the congregation
followed by the announcements.
The UCW are making beef pies on

welcome to come and help. Orders
can be placed with Barbara
Anderson or Ruth Gordon.
Rev. Peter Tucker who had been
the minister in Belgrave from 1989
to 1993 and then moved to Elliott
Lake has passed away.
Happy birthday to Emily Bieman
who will be nine on Jan. 7.
Lila Procter mentioned that her
son Ben is running in Florida where
temperatures are in the 95°F
range.
Abby Robinson assisted by Rev.
Tom Murray lit the Christ Candle.
The call to worship was read
responsively followed by the singing
of “Angels We Have Heard on
High”.
After the morning prayer the
senior choir sang, “Joyful, Joyful We
Adore Thee” accompanied by Ann
Clark at the piano and Abby
Robinson with a chime.
The children gathered in the front
pew. Rev. Tom Murray told them of
the special star that God had put in
the sky when Jesus was born. The
wise men who lived in the east saw
this star. They knew it was a sign that
a baby king had been born. These
wiseman wanted to visit the baby so
they followed the star for a long
way.
The wisemen went to King
Herod’s in Jerusalem to find out
where the Baby King was born.
King Herrod did not want anyone
else to be called the King. The
wisemen went on and the star led
them to the place where Jesus was.
They gave him gifts of gold,
frankincense and myrrh. God knew
that King Herrod did not like anyone
else to be called the king. God sent
the wisemen a dream telling them
not to tell King Herrod where the
baby was. The wisemen went home
a different way. After The Lord’s
Prayer the children adjourned to
Sunday school.
The scripture lesson was taken
from Ephesians 3: 1-12, followed by
the singing of “Christ is Alive” and
the “Christ’s Glory and Right” read
responsively. The gospel lesson was
taken from Matthew 2: 1-12.
Rev Murray’s sermon was entitled
“Follow That Star”. It related to the
children’s story. Nothing happens in
this world until someone sees a star
and follows it. Rev. Tom related to
people who had followed a star until
their journey was complete. Thoseare the people who are successful inthe world – people who refuse to
give up and instead they follow their
star regardless of the obstacles. “Yes
I Can!” are three of the most potent
words in life. The Magi were “Yes I
Can!” people, but more than
anything else, the three Magi were
men of faith. People who make a
difference in the world are not
content or satisfied to sit on the
sidelines. They set their sights on a
worthy star and they follow it with
all their heart and faith. The
most magnificent star that we
can follow is the same today as it
was at the time of Jesus’ nativity –
birth.
Ken Procter and Allen Walker took
up the offering. After the offering
praise and the offertory prayer, the
closing hymn was, “O Splendour of
God’s Glory”. The commissioning
and benediction and the singing of
“Go Now in Peace” concluded the
morning worship service. On Jan. 13
Epiphany 2, God’s word is
“Recalling Jesus’s Baptism through
our Own!”
The community extends sincere
sympathy to Nancy Tucker and
family in the recent loss of her
husband Rev. Peter Tucker.
On Tuesday, Jan. 15 is the
Women’s Institute potluck meal
at noon in the Knox United
Church basement. Everyone is
welcome.
The Belgrave Variety held a toy
drive and toonie donation for the
Huron County Christmas Bureau
which exceeded expectations. They
delivered three big boxes of
children’s toys and a cheque for
$180. The donations helped make
Christmas a little brighter for some
well-deserving children and families
in need.
Neil and Joan Vincent greeted
worshippers and handed out the
service of worship at Knox United
Church on Sunday, Dec. 30.
Christmas chimes music was
supplied by Bruce Whitmore, Bill
Coultes, Neil Vincent, John
Campbell and Caileigh Hopper,
Emily Bieman, Austin Brenan and
Hayden Jamieson directed by Ann
Clark.
Bruce Whitmore welcomed the
congregation. The flowers on the
piano were placed by relatives in
loving memory of Helen
Stonehouse. The congregation sang
Happy Birthday to Caleigh Hopper
for her ninth birthday.
The call to worship was read
responsively the prayer of
invocation, the prayer of confession
and the assurance of pardon were
read in unison. The senior choir
sang, “What Child is This”
accompanied by Ann Clark. “Joy to
the World” was the children’s hymn,
the children gathered in the front
pew for the story time with Mr.
Whitmore.
He asked the children what month
it was and what was so special about
it? They replied that it was
December and Christmas and that
Jesus was born in Bethlehem and it
was His birthday and we celebrate
Jesus’s birthday each year. Mr.
Whitmore told the children he had
been to Bethlehem and saw the
actual manger where Jesus was born.He had walked on the same groundthat Jesus had walked and stood
under the same olive trees that were
2,000 years old. He had brought a
small camel that had been carved
from an olive tree. Both he and
his wife, Marg rode on a camel
while on their trip to Bethlehem and
he showed the picture to the
children. After The Lord’s Prayer,
the children adjourned to Sunday
school.
The scripture lesson was taken
from Thessalonians 5: 1-4 and 16-24
and followed by the singing of the
hymn, “See Amid the Winter’s
Snow”. Mr. Whitmore’s message
was entitled “The Christmas
Controversy”. It’s time to saveChristmas by our actions. WithoutJesus, Christmas is just another day.
The real reason for the season is to
keep Jesus in our heart. If we don’t
see a Merry Christmas sign in the
store you need to walk right past the
store and celebrate the true meaning
of Christmas.
Ken Procter and Larry Harper
collected the offering followed by
the offertory prayer in unison.
Prayers of the people were followed
by the closing hymn, “Come, Let us
Sing of a Wonderful Love”.
The community extends sincere
sympathy to the family of Helen
Stonehouse who passed away Dec.
26.
