Columnist recalls winter activities of her youth
The year 2013 has arrived and
with it the hopes for a happy,
healthy, prosperous year ahead. The
joy of enjoying gatherings with
family members and the hopes of
many more gatherings will make the
year hurry along. It will be just five
weeks until Family Day will be
celebrated and 10 weeks until
Easter. Children will be anxious to
get back to school to see their
friends and yet can’t wait until
March break arrives in about nine
weeks!
We have finally had a taste of
winter, snowy weather and yet 10
weeks will be the first day of spring!
Time flies and with everyone’s busy
lives, the year will pass just as
quickly as last year.
Our winter wonderland of snow
finally brought some children out ofthe house to play in the snow. Overthe Christmas break, the commentwas made by several, that not many
children were seen playing outside.
There was not much snow, but
enough for some playing. Today’s
video games, computer games and
other electronic entertainment has
children staying comfortably inside.
It is no wonder Health Canada is
concerned about children’s lack of
physical activity.
The conversation turned to what
we use to do during the holidays
when we were children. I was lucky
and lived in town, so walking to the
arena for public skating put in a lot
of time. We lived near a huge hill, so
tobogganing was also a favourite
pastime. Snow forts abounded on
every neighbour’s lawn and
snowball wars were fought daily.
My brothers had road hockey games
and it was not unusual to have eight
to ten boys blocking the street.
When there were not enough kids
for a game, shooting pucks at the
net, or garage door, would go on and
on and on. I recall the downstairs
clothesline lined from end to end
with wet mitts, scarves and hats and
snowsuits, drying to be ready for the
next day of play. Everything weowned would be wet, but we had alot of fun! Families gathered over Christmas
and children returned from many
places. Some of the happy families
that welcomed their children home
for a stay included Jim and Linda
McDonald, who had son Andrew
home from Edmonton. He surprised
the rest of the McDonald/Machan
families with his visit.
Eric and Deb Ross welcomed
their son Christopher home from
Grande Prairie. He was here for a
two-week visit with everyone. The
boys managed to have a party on
New Year’s so Chris had a chance to
see a lot of his friends.
Brian and Shelley McGavin had
son Brandon home for a good visit.
He is in college in Olds, Alberta and
enjoyed his break away. He made
the rounds of visiting family and
friends before his return to school.
Congratulations to Dave and
Karen Bowles on becoming
grandparents again. Their daughter
Stacey and Shayne MacKenzie have
welcomed a baby boy named
Cooper to big sister Abigail’s
delight. Great-grandma Dorothy
Dilworth is pleased as punch to have
a great grandson. Our sympathies are extended tothe Campbell/Johnston families onthe passing of Joan Johnston
Campbell of Truro, Nova Scotia. A
celebration of life service was held
at Blyth United Church. She will be
missed by her family Charlene,
Grant and Sharon and families of
Nova Scotia She will also be missed
by her sister Leona Armstrong and
Jim of Brussels, Helen and Doris
and many other Johnston and
Campbell relatives throughout our
area. The Johnston girls were raised
on the eighth of Morris, the current
Jim and Evelyn Blake farm.
The Cranbrook Dart League
began its season of darts on Jan. 2.
There were 17 players out of the 24
present to try their hand and luck at
hitting the mark. They have a few
new players anxious to learn and
have some fun with the group. The
high shots of the night were by
Evelyn Blake 87, Murray Houston
and George Zwep with 127 each.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week include Stephen Henderson,
Ben Hoegy, Jodi McIntosh, Sarah
Stephenson, Marie Blake, Julia
Mitchell, Caleb Ringgenberg, Laura
Dawson, Logan Terpstra, Evelyn

Midget AA Lightning take bronze in Mississauga
The Saugeen Maitland Midget AA
Lightning had a short break for the
holidays, travelling to Mississauga
for the Christmas Classic
Tournament Dec. 27-29 and coming
home with the bronze medal.
The Lightning opened the
tournament with a 3-1 win over the
host Mississauga Chiefs. Miranda
Lantz scored two goals and Tori
Terpstra added a single. Ashlee
Lawrence earned two assists while
Jordyn Sholdice and Dawn Pletsch
each added helpers in the game.
In their second round robin game,
the Bolts down the Willowdale Red
Wings 3-0 with Shea Tiley earning
the shutout in net. Kelly Gribbons
opened the scoring, assisted by
Terpstra. Courtney Surridge then
scored on a beauty three-way
passing play from linemates Cassidy
Colhoun and Lexi Smith. Gribbons
closed out the scoring with assists
going to Maddie Duncan and
Terpstra.
The Lightning closed out their
round robin with a 2-1 victory over
the Milwaukee Junior Admirals
earning them first place in their pool
and a spot in the quarterfinals.
Lawrence scored from Lantz and
Smith notched the winner, deking
out two Milwaukee defenders before
depositing the puck in the top corner
of the net. Colhoun and Surridge
earned assists on the winning goal.
The Lightning faced the
Haldimand River Cats in their
quarterfinal match on Friday evening
and defeated them 3-1. The hard
work of the grind line paid off as
Lawrence scored the opener with
assists going to Pletsch and Lantz.
Terpstra scored a pair, one on a
breakaway from Smith and one on a
pass from Gribbons on her knees
from behind the net. That placed the
Bolts into a semi-final match against
the Oakville Hornets, two teams the
odds-makers would have placed in
the tournament final instead of
facing in the semifinal.
All shots through regulation and a
five-minute overtime period were
turned aside by goaltender Morgan
Baker and the Oakville netminder,
requiring the game to go to a
shootout at 0-0. Unfortunately, the
Hornets prevailed in the shootout,
sending the Lightning to the bronze
medal game against the Brantford
Ice Cats.
The loss to the Hornets and the
six-game weekend appeared to take
the wind out of the Lightning sails
and the bronze medal game also
ended scoreless after three periods
and overtime. This time the
Lightning prevailed, with Lantz
scoring on her shootout attempt.
Shea Tiley was solid, stopping all
shots in the game and all three
Brantford shootout attempts.
The Bolts thank the two call-ups
from the Bantam AA team, Nikki
Zabel and Neve VanPelt who played
well all weekend.

Tough loss
The Blyth Brussels Midget Rep team welcomed their neighbours from Wingham last week.
Unfortunately for the home team, Wingham came out with their game faces on, taking the
match 5-2. (Jim Brown photo)
Despite two close losses, the
Blyth Brussels Minor Hockey Tyke
Blue team had a fun time at the
London Knights’ Tournament
recently.
The team took on Sarnia and lost
by one goal with only four seconds
left on the clock, beat St. Marys and
then lost to Embro 4-2.
While the team had fun on the ice,
they also got to tour the dressing
room of the Knights and saw the
jerseys of former Knights like
Patrick Kane and Rick Nash.
They also received autographed
pictures of players, a signed Max
Domi print and Ashley Radford and
Connor Dale were randomly chosen
to skate before the opening of the
London Knights game.
Unfortunately, The Knights lost in
overtime.
