More info: 519-348-8025 or 519-887-9663 Sports Atom Burgundy wins ‘B’ trophy in Wingham tourney Over the Christmas break the Blyth Brussels Atom LL Burgundy Team travelled to Wingham for a one day tournament where they played three games. The team’s first game was against St. Marys, unfortunately the Burgundy squad fell short by one goal in a 5-4 loss, but they played a very hard back and forth game. The second game they played saw them defeat TCDMHA 5-0. The team played very well together passing the puck and putting it in the net. Blake Porter got on the scoreboard putting two goals in the net assisted by Rylee Chalmers for Blyth Brussels to take the lead. In the second period the boys came out and Josh Plunkett scored with a pass from Chalmers and John Nesbit. Nathan Brown notched one unassisted goal to end the second period. Chalmers scored one more in the third to make the win solid. The third game they played against Wingham for an action packed game. With the fans on the edge of their seats early in the game Brown scored, assisted by Plunkett and Chalmers. Wingham squeaked in one goal to tie the game. Porter put another one in to take the lead in the first period. The team did a great job killing off two penalties and putting another goal in the net by Brown, assisted by Chalmers. The third period was back and forth action with fans cheering them on until Wingham scored with four minutes left in the third. Blyth Brussels held them off and took the win for the ‘B’ Championship. Previously, the team won two games before heading into Christmas break. The team played Mitchell and came out with a score of 6-1. They got on the scoreboard in the first period with Chalmers and Porter getting goals assisted by Porter and Devin Bridge. In the second period Cole Zwep earned two goals assisted by Claire Mitchell and Porter. Mitchell got one past the pads of Ty McNichol in the second period by that didn't stop the Burgundy team. In the third period two more goals were shoved in by Zwep and Porter assisted by Zwep. A great game played by all. The team then hosted Tiverton for an outstanding win of 7-2. With Tiverton quickly coming out of the gates they shot one in the net in the first period taking the lead. The team tied it up with Claire Mitchell taking the puck up the ice from defence to score unassisted. Tiverton got another one past the pads to take the lead. The second period gave Zwep a chance to shove two in the net and Porter to put another one in assisted by Chalmers. They kept going in the third period with Simon Johnston, Chalmers and Bridge all taking credit for goals. Another great game played by all. Tough loss The Blyth Brussels Bantam Girls welcomed Georgian Shores for some home-ice action over the weekend. The visitors, however, got the best of the hometown squad, beating Blyth Brussels 3-2. (Jim Brown photo) The Wingham Golf and Curling club bade farewell to a good 2012 and is looking forward to another busy year in 2013. On Wednesday, Jan. 2 the Wednesday night mixed league got things curling. The team of Tyler Stewart, Spenser Shaw, Jordan Errington and Mike Hoskins started the year in a great way picking up their first win. The Julie Hallahan and Wayne Horton teams also went home with victories. The Thursday daytime league winning skips were Stewart Leedham, Bill Tolton, Allan Webster, Bruce Robertson, Barry Simpson and Bob Johnston. It was sure great to see skip Clayt Ruppel back in action and take team Johnston down to their last rocks. The Thursday night Belgrave group saw Elliott Miller, Jen Elston, Dave Inglis and Doug Miller skip their teams to victory. The Friday night mixed league thanks to the hard work of Diane Simpson, had six teams hit the ice with Murray Fear, Wayne Waechter and Barry Simpson wrapping up the week on top. The bonspiel season is set to start on Jan. 19 with the mixed spiel followed by the men’s spiel on Jan. 26. Anyone wishing to enter a team or be part of a team please give Bruce a call at the pro shop 519-357- 2179. This Sunday, Jan. 13 the club is offering curling for children ages seven to 14. If you are interested in curling or helping to get these kids started in this fun-filled game come out to the curling club at 1 p.m. OUT OF THE HACK The pest control produce annual usage report for 2012 season is available for viewing in the pro shop. Skips and Stones – By Bruce Skinn Novice Reps win Silver Stick The Blyth Brussels Minor Hockey Association Novice Rep squad met Mildmay in the final game of the Silver Stick tournament in Kincardine. The teams had faced off a day earlier and Mildmay had gotten the better of the Blyth Brussels squad but, after 25 minutes of regular game time and two five minute overtime periods and a shootout, Blyth Brussels won 3-2 to claim the championship. Previously the team beat Seaforth, Stayner and Durham in the tournament to advance to the finals against Mildmay. In regular season play, the Novice squad bested the Seaforth Stars again 8-0 at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre on Jan. 5. The team next takes to the ice on Jan. 12 for a tournament in Lucknow, followed by several season games and the next level of the Silver Stick tournament in St. Clair Shores, Michigan.
