Last week Mr. Coup’s Grade 7
class worked on Christmas activities
for English which involve
researching about family’s
Christmases long ago. Grade 7
students were also wondering if the
weather would interfere with
Christmas celebrations. Some
students are making a time capsule,
Christmas/holidays mural or a
Christmas collage. Phoebe and
Holly made a collage. Some of the
pictures they put in theirs were
things they wanted for Christmas
like makeup, shoes and perfume.
Now on to the Grade 7/8 class. In
our class we have been doing
creative writing. In math we are
doing integers (positive and negative
numbers). We have been reading the
book Half Brother. It is about a boy
named Ben and his mother
and father who are scientists. They
are working on their newest
project – Project Zan. Zan is a
newborn baby chimp that Ben and
his family are trying to teach sign
language to.
The Grade 7/8 students are
learning that they are responsible for
who they choose to become.

head, Feet in your shoes, You can
steer yourself in anyway you
choose.” – Dr. Seuss.

This week at Hullett Central
Public School we shared lots of
Christmas spirit. We had a Christmas
concert and everybody had a jolly
time.
Our concert started with the Grade
5/6 instrumental band and they
played two songs. While they moved
their instruments out of the way, we
sang, “The Christmas Song” and
“Jingle Bells”. Then Grade 1 class
sang a song called “Gingerbread”.
The Grade 2 class sang, “There Was
a Little Baby” and the Kindergarten
class sang “Colours” . We then
carolled some more and the Grade
2/3 class sang “Rocking Around the
Christmas Tree”. The Grade 3/4
class then sang a song called
“Skating and Sleighing” and they
also played their recorders and
played a song called “Santa Samba”.
Then the primary choir got up and
sang for the whole school.
Finally the whole school then
gathered and sang Christmas carols.

The Grade 4/5 class had a
publisher party last Wednesday.
Parents were invited to class to view
and hear the students’ stories.
Everyone was very proud of the
students’ hard work. I asked a few of
the students what they thought. They
all thought their progress was
awesome and that they had fun
writing. They definitely believed
that they deserved a party to show
off their hard work.

Mrs. Taylor’s Kindergarten class
was very excited last week not only
because Christmas was just around
the corner, but also because Rosie
the guppie gave birth to three
beautiful little guppies with her
loving partner, Sparky, at her side.
Names for the three new additions
have yet to be decided. Rosie is
doing well.
Mrs. Thorpe-Hearn’s
Kindergarten students were getting
ready for the concert by painting
pictures and practising their songs
and poems and chant many times
each day. They spent time reading
individually with their teacher and
exploring the various reading
strategies available to use when they
encountered unfamiliar print. They
have been exploring ways to
decompose the number three by
using part-part-whole machines and
buttons, and then recording their
findings on specially designed
sheets. They have all become very
proficient at printing the numbers
zero, one, two and three.
Last week they also began to
explore the properties of the number
four. Their unit on colour ended with
a party where they graphed the
colours of Smarties (and then ate the
contents of their Smarties box).
Then they compiled jello rainbows
to eat after first writing up a
On Dec. 20 Hullett Central Public
School started the day with its
Christmas concert. A large number
of parents and grandparents were in
attendance for what was a neat
presentation by pupils Kindergarten
through Grade 6. In charge of this
musical event was Mrs. Barnett who
had help from the staff. Mrs.
Bosman was at the piano providing
accompaniment.
The junior band, pupils from
Grade 5 and 6, opened the concert.
For the Grade 5 pupils and pupils
new to the school, this was their first
performance on instruments. They
can be pleased with their rendition
of “Good King Wenceslas”.
Members of the band for whom this
is their second year playing
instruments played “Jolly Old St.
Nicholas” which featured sectional
playing.
The Grade 1 students have been
focusing on gingerbread in
December and their concert number
was “Gingerbreads”. The song was
all about being happy together,
sharing and, of course, tasting good.
They held up paper gingerbread
creations depicting the boys, girls,
cats and mice from the song.
The Grade 2 class presentation,
“There Was A Little Baby”, told
about the nativity scene and the
children were dressed accordingly.
Mrs. Gerber’s Grade 2/3 class
decorated a Christmas tree while
they sang, “Rocking Around the
Christmas Tree”. They amused the
audience with their dancing/rocking
as well.
The Kindergarten classes have
been studying colour all fall, which
they demonstrated that morning. They began with a rainbow chantwhich also involved rhythm. Then
they sang about the rainbow colours.
As they sang large coloured
decorated squares were held aloft to
show green for grass, blue for sky,
etc.
Dressed in hats, scarves and mitts
the Grade 3/4 class sang about
skating and sledding. Parts of the
song became a type of round with
the skaters and sledders singing their
own parts, a step up for them from
regular choral singing. As a
precursor to learning a band
instrument in Grade 5, Mrs. Barnett
introduces the classes which have
Grade 4 pupils to recorders. The
group did a good job of “Santa
Samba” considering they didn’t start
playing until November.
Grades 1 to 3 made for a large
junior choir. As the pupils sang in
the various costumes they wore for
their other numbers it was an
interesting group that sang two
numbers. “Christmas Spirit” was a
reminder that anyone can put the
spirit of Christmas into the season’s
celebrations. “Presents” was also a
reminder. They told the audience
that a gift, even a small one, tells the
receiver that someone is thinking of
them with that gift of love.
As the various classes came and
went from their places at the front of
the auditorium, everyone was
invited to join in the singing of
carols. The children made things
more interesting by doing the extras
during some songs, echos, actions,
etc.
I came away from the concert
thinking how lucky we are to still
have the school in the village so the
community can catch the Christmas
spirit and enjoy that special
something that comes from being
involved in the lives of the children.

Despite the stormy weather
outside on Friday, Dec. 21,
Londesborough United Church was
filled with warmth as church family
members gathered to entertain
and/or be entertained by their own.
It was an appreciative and uncritical
audience which put the performers
at ease and increased their
self confidence about being
the centre of attention. Young and
not so young were part of the
program.
The audience enjoyed vocal
numbers from Eli and Sadie Baxter,
the youngest stars that evening, to
begin the program. Mel Knox
offered “I’m Dreaming of a White
Christmas” and later in the night
joined with Harry Lear to sing, “Star
of the East”. Two lovely numbers.
Louise and Darlene Lobb sang a
duet, “Infant Lowly, Infant Holy”,
then went to the piano and played
together Leonard Cohen’s rather
haunting “Hallelujah”.
Three members of the Hunking
family entertained as well. Sydney
and Shana both played Christmas
music on the piano. Mom Kim sang
beautifully her vocal tribute, “To
