The Red Cross work rooms at the Town Hall will be open on Thurs day afternoon this week in place of Friday owing to the World Day of Prayer service. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Corbett have ‘moved to the farm owned by Dr. A. R. Campbell on the second con cession of Hay and are getting nice ly settled. The W.C.T.U. will hold the re gular monthly meeting on Thurs day afternoon in the schoolroom of the United Church at 3 o’clock. A three-act comedy drama en titled "The Whole Town’s Talking” . will b& presented in the Town Hall on Friday evening by the Ailsa Craig cast, under the local Red Cross Society. Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Moore and family attended the funeral of the former's mother, the late Mrs. Isaac Moore, which was held from Eg- mondville United Church on Friday afternoon. The World D'&y of Prayer service will be held on Friday at 3 p.m. in the schoolroom of Carmel Presby terian Church, when the W.M.S. of the local churches will participate. Every lady in the community is cordially invited to attend. Rev. R. A. Brook conducted ser vices in the United Church On Sun day. The choir sang two anthems, "Stand’ Up for Jesus”, Mrs. Drys dale and Mr. W. O. Goodwin sing ing the duet and “O God, the Roek of Ages.” . ■ Fractured Reg in Fall on; Ice Mrs. Minnie Sangstei* had the mis fortune on Sunday afternoon When returning home from a visit with a friend on the highway to slip and fall on the ice. Dr. D. G. Steer at tended Mrs. Sangster and removed her to Scott Memorial Hospital, Sea forth, Where an X-ray was taken and showed that her leg had been fractured near the hip. Mrs. Sang* ster will remain at the hospital for several days. Rev. Wm. Weir Conducted ser vices in Carmel Presbyterian Church on Sunday. The choir sang an an them at the morning service, en titled "Lead Me 0 Father”. Miss Irene Hoggarth, soloist. The even ing service was a service of sung. Rev. Weir delivered' a fine address oh hymns we sing in war time, many of which were sung during the service. A trio comprised of Mrs, Malcolm DoUgall, Mrs. AhdreW Dougall and Miss Margaret Dougall sang a special number and the chair sang "Jesus Shall Reign,” with Miss Irene Hoggarth as soloist. Y.F.U. Mold DcvotioiM Meeting The Young People’s tinioh met on Monday evening in the school room of the United Church With Miss Norma Cook presiding. The meeting opened by singing "He Leadeth Me”, after which Miss Ruth Brpok led in prayer, The Scripture reading was taken by Bob Hess, Following the reading of the minutes and the roll call Miss Ruth Brook presided over* the business period. The hymn “Sow ing in the Morning”, was sung and Mrs. N. E. Cook favored with »a piano instrumental, Which was much enjoyed. A short play fea turing the study of the. Old Testa ment was presented by Misses Gladys McKenzie, Edna Saundercock, Nor ma Cook and Ruth Brook. The meeting concluded by singing “God be With You Till We Meet Again” and the Mizpah benediction. A con test was directed by, Miss Gladys McKenzie, Peter Stewart Passes Away Following Week’s Illness The death occurred on Sunday morning of Mr. Peter Stewart in his 76th year. The deceased was taken ill a week ago with a stroke and was removed to the home of Mrs.’ Annie Saundercock, where he passed away, Born near Cromarty. Mr. Stewart was a bachelor, and moved to Hensall a number of years ago. He was caretaker of the pub lic School for a number of years and was an excellent curler in for mer years, He was a member of Carmel Presbyterian Church and never missed a service when health permitted him to attend. One sis ter, Mrs. John Wren, of New Rock ford, North Dakota, survives. A public funeral service was held from the late home on Tuesday after noon conducted by Rev. Wm, Weir. The pallbearers were Messrs. Jas. Hoggarth, Ira Geiger, Thos. Hud son, Alf Taylor, Pete McNaughton and Roy Todd. Interment was in Hensall Union Cemetery. DASHWOOD Quilting is the order of the day by the ladies of both churches. Murray Wolfe, who spent a few weeks at his home here, has return ed to Fort Erie, where he has a position. Ross Guenther underwent an op eration for the removal of his ton sils and adenoids on Tuesday in Dr. Taylor’s hospital. * Miss Myrtle Gaiser spent the week-end with Miss Belva Truemner on the '14th concession. Mrs. Miles left last week for her home in Sarnia. Donald Oestreicher and Camp bell McLagan of London Medical School spent the week-end with the former’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Oestreicher. Miss Hope Roppel of Western University, London, spent the week end with her parents, Rev. and Mrs. H. E. Roppel. Mr. Al. Philips, of Detroit, spent last week-end with friends here. Miss Onieda Restemeyer, R.N., and Miss Rugie Desjardine, of Lon don, spent a few days with Mr. and Mrs. 0. Restemeyer. WOODHAM Miss Evelyn Wynn, of London, was a Week-end guest at the home of her mother, Mrs. Wm. Wynn. Mrs. Geo. Hopkins was a Sun day .visitor with Miss Ada Hop kins. Friends of Mrs. John Routley are sorry to know that she is still confined to her bed, but hope »for a speedy recovery. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Rodd were at London on Saturday last. Several families south, of Wood ham were without mail last week for five days, owing to the Gran ton mail carrier, Mr. Carson, be ing unable to reach here on e.c-, count of the blocked condition of the Granton roads as far as Whalen. The snow plow was quite busy last week keeping the No. 23 high way clear, the snow being piled 10 feet high in places north and south 'of Woodham. CREDITON EAST Mr. and Mrs. Alec Hamilton and son Barry of Grand Bend spent Sun day with Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lewis, Gunner Leonard Wein, of Wood- stock, spent the week-end at his home here. Mr. Eldon Merner Was called to Stratford on Wednesday. Mrs. Merner, who has been there for some time, underwent a serious op eration. Mr. Jack Appleton is confined to his home through illness. They were united in marriage on Saturday, February 15th, by Rev. Wm, Mair, of Thames Road. The marriage took place in the manse. A pancake supper was held fa St, Mary’s Church on the 25 th, Shrove Tuesday. The new township snow plow made its first appearance in the village on Saturday last. The World Day of Prayer service is to be held on Friday next. The W.M.S, of the United Church will meet with the ladies of St, Mary’s Church. Measles and whooping cough are in a number of homes at present, Mr. and Mrs, Levi White of Sas katchewan are visiting relatives and friends. Owing to the pancake supper there was no Young People's meet ing this week. On Saturday, Feb. 15th, Miss Jessie Wright, daughter of- Mr. John Wright and the late Mrs. Wright, was united in marriage to Mr. Har old Elson, son of Mr, and Mrs. El son of Greenway, Best wishes go with the young couple. There will be a meeting of all the Sunday School teachers and officers at the close of next Lord’s Day Service. The minister will preside, All are requested to be in attendance The minister, Rev. Lawrence H. Turner, B.A., will conduct services next Lord's. Birthday Celebration A most enjoyable evening was spent recently at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Godfrey Wein, when their family gathered to celebrate the eightieth birthday of Mr. Wein, who, received many gifts. Mr. Wein has seen the community grow from a forest into a fine farming country. Mr. and Mrs. Wein celebrated their golden wedding two years ago. Many interesting stories he can tell of early days. The younger gen eration with modern conveniences ’can hardly realize how they manag ed in those days. Another feature of the evening was the presentation of a beautiful wrist watch to Gnr. Leonard Wein, R.C.A., of Wood- stock. Lawrence Wein read the ad dress and Wesley Wein made the presentation. Mr. Wein and Leon ard expressed their appreciation for their gifts, The evening was spent 1 in games, aftei* which lunch was served. (Too late for last week) (Misses Clara Gaiser and Dorothy Rate spent the week-end with Mr. and Mrs. Ed Westcott, of Exeter. Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Brown spent Sunday at Kincardine. Mr. and Mr.s. Daniel Oestreicher entertained a number of their neigh bors on Monday evening, it being the occasion of Mr. Oestreicher’s 75th birthday. Rev. and Mrs. Pletch were present.- Mrs. Pletch observed a birthday on Sunday. Mr. Kenneth Lillow of North Bay- spent the week-end here. Mr. Arthur Haist left Monday for Windsor where he has accept ed a position with the Ford Motor Company. . • Pte. Lloyd England and L.Gpl. We are glad to report that Mr, Thos. Trev.ethick is improving af ter his recent illness.. Last. Wednesday afternoon the ladies of the community number ing about seventy, met in Mrs. Clarke’s hall for their weekly sew ing meeting. The first part of the afternoon was spent in sewing, af ter which the president, Mrs. F. W. Morlock took the -chair for the program. Several patriotic songs were sung and the "Daily Prayer” was repeated. ' Mrs. N. J. Dore, president of the Exeter Branch of the Red Cross then spoke on the work of the Red Cross and how it is carried on, after which Mrs. L. F. Howey, secretary of the Exeter Branch explained how the differ ent articles of knitting and cloth ing should be finished! She had samples of the articles there and this was,very helpful and instruc tive. Both speeches Wqre much ap preciated by the ladies. Lunch was served by some members of the Evangelical Mission Circle. During the afternoon the articles of sewing, knitting and the quilts made by the unit during January were displayed. This shipment in cluded 28 towels, 6 sheets, 7 ice bag covers, 4 slips, 2 pairs bloomers, 5 boys’ shirts, 1 ladies’ dress, 5 nightgowns, 2 waists, 2 jumpers, 1 velvet skirt, 1 dressing gown, 3 dresses, 1 windbreaker, 1 sweater, 1 blouse, 13 quilts, 33 pairs socks, 3 sweaters, 5 scarves, 2 helmets, 2 pairs mitts. Luker, a former'' resident of this village. On Friday afternoon of this week the Women's Missionary Socfety Will hold their World Day of Pray er service in the schoolroom of the church. All the ladies of the -com munity are invited to attend this service. Mrs. Wilfred Huxtable was in Exeter last week owing to the ill ness and death of her mother-in- law, -Mrs. W. Huxtable, who passed away at the home of her son, Fred, on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. George Flynn visit ed with their son, Harold, in Vic toria Hospital, London, on Tuesday. Harold was able -to sit up for the first time since his accident. (Intended for last week) Visitors over the week-end with Mr. and Mrs. Harold Murray were Mrs. George Hay and Patsy of Exe ter and* Mr. and Mrs. Victor Jeffery and Barry-, of Thames Road. W. M. S. Meeting • The regular monthly meeting of the Centralia W.M.S. was held In the schoolroom of the church on t.he afternoon of Tuesday., February 11th. The president, Mrs. W. Skin ner, was in -charge of the meeting, which opened with the singing of hymn “Oh Master Let Me Walk with Thee.” Mrs. Pen war den gave the study book, which consisted of. a very interesting account of the lives of Miss Maria Kim, a native Korean Christian teacher and Miss McKinnon, a nurse from Cape Bre ton, N.S., who is one of our mission aries to Korea. The hymn "Take Time to be Holy” was sung, fol lowed by the -Lord’s prayer in uni son. The 46th Psalm, which begins "The Lord is my refuge and strength” was read by Mrs. R. Smith, The. roll call, to be answered by a verse of scripture beginning with -the letter "F” was respond ed to by 10 members and there was one visitor. The closing hymn Was "My Jesus I Love Thee”, followed by prayer and the benediction by the president. Tea was served bv Mrs. W. Skinner, assisted -by Mrs. R. Smith and Mrs. Falconbridge. ZION * Miss Jean Brock visited on Sun day with Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Dickenson. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hern, Harry and Bobby, spent Sunday with Mrs. George Earl, a patient in St. Jo seph’s Hospital, London. We are glad to hear -that she is improving. The Community Club will hold its. meeting on Friday night, February 28th, in Zion schoolhouse. Miss Marjorie Earl spent the week-end in Exeter with Mrs. A. Gunning. Mr. and Mrs. Warren. RESIDENT SUCCUMBS Eva Maud Farran Rance, wife of Col Harry Torr Rance, division court clerk, Clinton, died on Sunday afternoon at -her home fa her 73rd year after a long illness.
