Men and. women have been
populating this old earth in all
ages of civilization. They have
made up the world's society,
yet in na age has the voice of
women been more articulate
than today. They are demand-
ing equality and justice, they
arc finding their phew beside
men in world affairs, in spheres,
-of business activity and in gov-
ernment politics at all - levels.
It is not a comparison I wish
to make in coupling the names
of Charlotte Whitton, former
Mayor of Ottawa, and Julia
Xintiski, Edmonton Alderman.
The only thing they really have
in common is their one political
characteristic, they both fight
tooth and nail for the things,
they believe in. They are the
two women in Canadian politics
whoa have delighted reporters'
because they have provided ex-
citing headlines. If Charlotte
Whitton appears to have faded
for 'the ;time being from polit-
ical office, julla Xiniski is still
out !in the west, trying to rat-
tle the bones of Skeletons she
thinks may -be hidden in the
cupboards of her municipality,
I met 'big Julia, on a very
warm morning during my mt.-
mar travels aS she entered the
handsome foyer of Edmonton's
City Hall. Though she is a
large woman both in stature
and outlook, she is an extremely
feminine persen. She is the
Oltenia of western hospitality,
invites anyone she admires to
lie a guest in her home, She
looked keenly at mie, aSSessing
me qtmite frankly. Evidently I
met with her aPpreVal fot In

How Timings Change? -
Mather of six, including the
$100,000-a-year wrestler, Gene
Xiniski, Big Julia has marked
her 66th birthday. The family
now enjoys prosperity, but
there was a time before the
last war when her husband was
a $5-a-week barber and she a
working mother.
Whether Edmontonians en-
dorse, condemn, or condone her
political 'tactics, they have 'to
admire her dedication. I was
told her health has suffered
from the strain of public life.
Whether she carries on with
her political career or not, Julia
Kiniski will always be remeta-
bored for -her unorthodox, yet
effective, 'approach to munici-
pal politics.
Next week, election day will
dawn with a whole new regi-
ment of voters who have at-
tained their majority since the
last federal election casting
their vote for 'the Alit time.
Among them could' posSibl3r be
a Charlotte Whitton or a Julia
Kiniski.
