FRESH AIR!
"The New Democrats manage to bring a breath of
fresh air into what has -become the very sordid business of
Canadian politics. It is refeshing to find a group of bright-
eyed, engergetic men more interested in fighting for ideals
than for personal political gain or, worse still, profit" —
"In effect the New Democrats have held the politiCal
balance of power all during the cUrrent parliament, but have
had the good conscience never to use that whip hand.
"But there are other reasons besides the part'S fine re-
cord that the NIDP should make substantial gains and per-
haps even become the official opposition party in the next
election" . . . .
"There is widespread disappointMent in the leadership
and performance of both the Liberal and Progressive Con-
SerVatiVe parties. This stands to earn the ND? more votes
everyWhere, but the biggest gains hi seats are liable to be
in Specific areas."

Register Once,
Double Benefits
From Government
The Unemployment Insur-
ance Commission said recently
that the current registration
for the Canada Pension Plan
is apparently leading many
Canadians who already have a
social insurance number to ap-
ply for a second one. Tine com-
mission emphasized that one
number provides identity for
both Canada Pension Plan. and
Unemployment Insurance pur-
poses and that the individual
must not have more than one
number.
• Those Who apply more than
once may be building up future
difficulties for themselves in re-
gard to payments from either
or both plans. They may find
that they have created more
than one "account" for their
contributions and thus have
trouble obtaining their full en-
titleanent when the time comes
to obtain benefits.
The UIC noted that every ef-
fort is made to avoid assigning
more than one number to an
individual. However, when the
particulars given on one appli-
cation' are not identical to those
given on an earlier application,
a ,second number will be issued.
For the individual who al-
ready has more than one social
insurance number, the commis-
sion says the solution is simple,
He should report the problem
to the nearest U1C office :bring-
ing with him or mailing, all
the social insurance number
cards in his possession. The
commission Will cancel the lat-
er number or numbers and sup-
ply a hew social insurance

While it is an offense for a
person to knowingly apply for
more than one number, it is
recognized that most Multiple
applications are made, inadver-
tently, The tanntiSelon streSSed
that its immediate interest it
to have those who contribute
to either the Canada Pension
Plan or unemployment inSur.
