to the Public School Trustees'
Association. "I have, mentioned
the fine ne wschool buildings
which many of our school
boards have built, A good sch-
ool, however, is not a good
building with teachers inside,
but rather good teachers with
a building around them, Indeed
the quality of a ,child's educa-
tion depends primarily on the
classroom teacher. If the pupils
are to be stimulated to grow'
and to develop in their best
fashion, school boards must in-
vest hi well-qualified teachers
before anything else."
Our boards have secured top
teachers — in fact the honour
graduate of the Stratford Tea-
chers' College.
The new legislation does not
limit the number ar size of
schools in a school area but
reduces the number of boards
to one.
If the original plans had pro-
ceeded with schools to accom-
modate (a) West Stanley and
Bayfield, (b) Brucefield, (c)
Egmondville — as was the plan
when the amalgamation, of
Hayfield, Stanley and Tucker-
smith was drawn up — we
could have been in three sch-
ools, convenient to all pupils
this year. This would have
made the majority of ratepay-
ers satisfied with education and
with their mill rate.

"West of West Stanley" Answers
"West Stanley" Ratepayer's Letter
would seem to be extended, at
least temporarily.
True, our children will have
to ride buses to Bayfield or
Hrucefield, but, please do not
say time and distance is not a
factor to be considered for a
small ohild.
When we first considered
central school, it was to be'
central, near Varna. Had some-
one said, "Hayfield", I be-
lieve the residents in the East-
ern pant of the Township would
have considered the distance
instantly. Therefore it seems if
the Golden Rule were 'honestly
applied and a few prejudiced
opinions removed, a four room
school in Hayfield would not
seem so ironical.
The following is an excerpt
from' an 'address of Hon. Wil.
ham Davis, "Great social chan-
ges have taken place. There
has been a shift from rural to
urban living". And yet the
school is to he built in a rural
area with continual bus service.
I am not against progress in
education, in fact I know it is
a must in this fast changing
society. I believe the 'trend will
be to television and mobile tea-
ching aids. These would be a-
vailable at a four-room school
at a nominal cost.

CALLING
ALL 'TEENS
Hi, there! Five more days!
But tell the truth, now, really
everybody is lodking forward
to going back to school for
some reason or other, You have
to admit that is nice to get
back .into the routine of things,.
the scheduled way of life.
Just think, 'another couple of
days and .we'll be back at the
building of noisy loekers,- rowdy
cl:tss changes, disorganized
time tables and forty-nine
thousand book reports.
Only the Grade XIII's are un-
fortunate enough to have to buy
their own text books this year,
The rest of the grades will have
them supplied. Here's hoping
that everybody has their books
supplied in another couple of
years. '
Just think,, soon it 'will be
back to the good old (but cold)
football games of CHSS vs. ?
This year a prayer for a sue-
cessful team should be added to
the regular morning one.
Local foots — still more
dances at 'the Bayfield Pay.
This weekend the Mojos. Look
for the Chevels at Seafonth on
Sept. 4.
Well, that's about it for now.
See you at the assembly on

Editor's Note: .The writer of
this letter answers point by
point 'the views of "Stanley
West", a pennarne for a reader
in favour of the proposed Cen-
tral School .at Brucefield, whose
"Lotter to the Editor" was pub-
lished last week in the News-
Record.
The Editor,
Clinton News-Record,
Dear Sir,
Being a mother in West
Stanley, with five children in
Public School, I 'would like to
reply to "Stanley West".
First of all, since actions of-
ten speak louder than words,
it is doubtful if reason number
one is really why those not in
favour of going to Bayfield is
true.
To any who recall the flash
ratepayers meetings, namely in.
Varna and SS No. 3, it will be
easy to see that respect shown
by you, and some of the mem-
bers of Stanley Township Coun-
cil that the regard for the e-
lected school board members
and their decisions are not al-
ways honored. They were duly
elected by the ratepayers then,
as now.
A's for reason number two,
please notice that both by pe-
tition and ballot the majority
in West Stanley have shown
their desire to go into Hayfield.
Our chairman, Mr. Taylor,
could hardly advise you any
differently at this time, regard-
ing the closing of the Bayfield
school, since the accommoda-
tion is still needed. Perhaps if
the plans of the Central School
were reduced to 14 rooms the
future for Bayfield School
