these five advantages make
It is 'the moment when Wade
Hentsworth announces 'that the
haunting melodies and lyrics he
writes are "just Songs". To la-
bel them as 'Folk Songs, Hems-
worth claims, is to presuppose
they are part of a country's
heritage long before they have
had,a chance to endure' the test
of time.,
If 'Song • of the -Wild- Goose'
and 'The Black Fly Song' have
not had time• to be 'tested', cer-
tainly they have • taken their
place among our folk heritage.
I Etat beearne aware there
was a ,Wade"1-lemsworth when
I hoard the 'Travelers, a folk
song group, • relating a little of
Hemswcath's background as a
member of ON's engineerting'de-
partment, before they sang
their own accompaniment 'The
Black Fly Song". This number
they have recorded: It has also
been recorded* by Pete Seeger
and is hicleded in the bee&
"The HiStory ' of " Canada 'in
Song" 'by Edith Fowke, Alan
Mills and Helmut Blume. Hems-
worth, too, has recorded • this
particular song for Folkways
Records.
For a person who has no for-
mal -Music training he can be
commended for having 'acquired
basic theories on his own. But
actually Wade Hemsworth, a
gr,acluate of Ontario Art Col-
lege, thought his career was fo-
cused on painting. As with so
many young men who saw serr
vice during .the last World War
Hemsworth's experience with
the Royal Canadian Air Force
stationed in NeWfoundland di-
verted his earlier ambitions, He
found his interest sparked by
the songs native to the island.
Inspiration for -three of his
songs was engendered after he
had left en advertising agency
he joined soon after his dis-
charge to become a surveyor for
the Ontario Hydro and later
with Quebec North Shore and
Labrador Railway.
This talented C anadia
whose ability was recognized by
the National Film Board, does
not usually write 'his songs
quickly. Yet when he was com-
missioned to create the musical
score for "Spring Drive" — a
motion picture documentary a-
bout a log drive, he accomplish-
ed not only the writing in six
weeks, but sang and played his
own songs for the sound track.
Evidently „there was 'not the
same impetus when "The Old
Rooster° roamed around in his
head for some three Years.
When it finally came into focus
he had 'this song written within
two weeks.
Temperament 'has something
to do with all creative achieve-
ment. Wade Hemmorth says he
must 'feel' a song and experi-
ence what it is supposed to sad.
Sometimes the melody comes
first, - at other times it is the
lyrics, "There, is no set pattern.
You can catch a melody ,c`ItglaiS,
enough, but to convey the con:-
tent of the song uh melody and
rhythni. I find' mush more dif--
ficult", he informed one inter-
viewer recently.
Avid Reader and Collector '
'He has a large record col-
lection based, as one might im-
agine, on folk music, Medan
jazz, Brrtok and early music.
He plays a Six-strung Spanish
gditat and hat perfornted in a
ntimber of Montreal's night
Spots. ,
His most severe craft is his
wife, Irene, a painter who pas-
set judgment On each new song
her' husband writes.
I cOntess I must go along
with him to a certain -6-Xtent
when he says, °the trOuble With
Music is that there is too muds
of it." He regards piped hi nails.,
