May 21st---a Fri- d ay night, This Friday there will be a dance in Auburn featuring the ClasSics. The Concords will be playing in Mitchell; and for the wandering souls looking for a redly swinging dance, the Del Rey's will be in Stratford on Friday and ,Brantford on Sat- urdtar, By the way, keep your fin- gers crossed this Saturday for Despite the changes 111 sac- iety in the past 20 years, swift, meet, relentless, frightening, there is one social unit that has proved. impervione and oblivious to the march of "progress." While it may have changed its terms of reference slightly, Otherwise it has altered al- most not at all since Man first crawled out of the ooze. I am talking about the family.- I became aware of this dur- ing • a panel disc:A:Seim by my high school students. The -topic Was "Early Marriages." (You'll - be glad to know they are 100 per cent. against them!) One panelist referred to the glossy, saccharine, phoney vor--: sion of marriage presented on TV and movies screens. She said it gave teenagers a false idea of marriage. A boy prompt- ly snorted, "Nobody's taken in by those,. We all come from homes with married people in them. Marriage isn't like that at all." Everyone agreed. And how night they were. Those cute, comfortable and tontrived families we see on the screen are about as much like the real thing as a ketchup- splattered Hollywood war is like a real wax, with real blood, real bodies, real terror. Oh, I know. There are brok-, en 'homes and, teenage delinqu- ents andellthat jazz. But don't you think there were any such in Rome 2,000 years ago, or Athens 3,000 years ago? It's just that they get a better play In the papers these days. Fam- ily life always has been, and still is, a facinating combinat- ion of fun and frustration, corn, fort and chaos. Sixty-eight thousand years ago, this -week, some crazy, hairy woman waded through the guck and bones to the back Janet -Gernall,..-Bbe is going to: Toronto to.'-comPete in the Le- gion area public -5.powooa test, good luck This week's Teen Opt4ton question. was "Po you dorx. tdor. the average teenager sponsible enough to have the right to vote at the age of 1,8'.?" The shocking .results; 70% no and 30% yes. The general corn- ment was that most teenagers can't be bothered with or are, not interested in politics, One comment was: - "If as is old enough to drive, drink and. get married, then 1, think it's old , enough to vote." Is it that teenagers really are not „responsible enough or are teens just too lazy to take on the responsibility? Let's do What so many people do and say, "Leave it to the govern- ment," Northing like passing 'the buck! Oh, well. That's it for now, till next time, Your swinging pal, PAX of the cave, took a look around, went back to the fire, kicked -her happy, recumbent, husband and burbled, "Come on, Buster, we're going to clean this place up." And the day before yesterday, my yeife took me by the hand, led -me down celler, and burbl- ed, "Come on, Buster, we're go- ing to clean -this place up." The only difference, in 68,000 34ars, was that the first guy merely had to carry some bones and hides outside. I had to make eight trips to the dump, and then white wash the cave. Three thousand years ago, Socrates told his wife, Xare thippe-, that ,he was going to a symposium. You mean you're gonna get stoned with all them bums down. at Jthe legion hall," she snarked, (This was right after the Persian Wars, and the veterans were in pretty high re- gard, the only outfit in town that could get a license.) The othe night my wife said, "And where hi the hell do you think you're going? Pray?" "I," I replied with some dig- nity, "am going to a sympos- ium." "You mean you're going to get sloshed with all those al- coholics in your investment club ?" she amended. See ? The grammar and diction have im- proved. But me and old Socrates got the same lunch when we got home: hot tongue and cold shoulder. Two thousand years ago, Ma-, eatonius Chesius, a Roman sen- ator, toppled into bed at three a.m., after writing a brilliant speech for delivery In -the senate on the morrow. At 6,15 he was vaulted into wakefulness by these sounds; his son practising on the buelm ('a war-horn that sounds like a lady Moose in la- bor): his daughter chanting "Eye-eye and eye-eye makes eyeevee ell and II makes IV); and his wife who couldn't sleep, cracking waInute on the head of a Greek slate kneeling on her side of the bed. This morning after marking essays till three a.m., I was hurled inte the world at 6:15 by these sounds: my daughter practising on her French horn, which sounds like a French lady- moiase in labor; my son chant- ihg Latin conjugations; and my wife, who, eouldn't sleep, chew- ing (not sucking) lifesavers ,about three inches teen my left ear.'
