• A Matter or
Principie
(By J. CARL HEMINOWAY)
With the problems of the
"FAME" Livestock Marketing
Co -Operative getting so much
attention from editers, not ,artlY
in farm. columns but even ex-
tensive editorials, 'it is interest-
ing to find that the White Bean
Board is now getting wide pab,
licitY.
The Ontario White Bean
Growers were riot getting the
returns for their crop that they
felt 'they shoald. After a great
deal of hard work and effort
on the part of a. comparatively
few growers the White Bean
Marketing Board was forayed.
The results were encourag-
Mg but the producers were
still having difficulty since the
product from the farm flwlas not
readily saleatble except to d'eal-
era. To overcome this problem
the Growers formed the Comp
any, Ontario Bean Growers
Ltd„ to be ale to process and
store beans during the peak
harvest periods and to have a
supply -tO seill at all times.
For many years this company
simply took surplus off 'tihe
market for export, usually at
a loss, This loss was made Yip
from the deduction taken to
finance the Bean Growers As-
sociation. This apparently didn't
cause any great concern to
anyone except the Growers who
felt this Company should be
able to 'pay its own way.
A cattle of years ago an
aggresaive 'Step was taken when
the Growers Company offered
over th-e floor price for beans
and moved directly into a com-
petitive position in the trade.
Volume VMS increased and the
Company showed a profit.
And now the trouble tarts!
The dealers Complained •that
it was unfair competition for
a levy to be used to subsidize
the members presented him
with a gift. Mrs. Gordon Chem-
ney sang two solos, accompan-
ied by Mrs. William J. Craig.
The roll call was answered by
naming a new product on the
grocery shelves and Opinions on
it. The'door prize was won by
Miss Viola Thompson. It was
drawn by Eldon Chamney.
Lunch was served by Mrs. Geo-
rge 'Million and Mrs. Robert
Phillips.
the losses , of a, company. But
for 'tihe last couple of years
there haven't been losses!
The Farm Products Market-
ing Board has responded With
an Ultimatum to the White
Bean Growers Marketing Board.
Gat separated from the On-
tario Bean Growers Ltd. or
ease!
Why? The levy busn't been
used to subsidize the Company
for a couple of years and, pros-
pects would lead us to believe
ft won't be necessary and after
all, it is th.e farmer's money.
But the Far& Products Mark-
eting Board says it might be!
Isn't this the same argument
that the Farm Products Mar-:
keting Board used to force the
Ontario Hog Producers Market-
ing Board' to adopt the tele-
type method of selling hogs.
Hogs might 'have been unfairly
allocated.
Remember Bill 86 makes the
Ontario Farm Preducts lVfar-
keting Board. all powerful un-
der the Minister of Agriculture
A Farrn Marketing Board can
be introduced, dissolved, or
operated by 'tihe Farm Procluett
Marketing Board without con-
sulting the prod,ucere concerned.
It seems to me that this mat-
ter of a levy subsidizing the
Company is just White -wash
now that the Company is oper-
ating at a profit.
Isn't it just posSible that -On-
tario Bean Growers Ltd. might
operate so succeadully that in
a few years it might well be
handling the White Bean Orop
—period. Private dealers just
might not have a lucrative
trade. It seems that farmert
