By Rev. R. W. Wenham
Rector, Sto Paul's Anglican Church, Clinton
Many roads led to Bethlehem when Christ was born of Mary. Joseph and Mary
had travelled a long tiresome road, plains, rocks, hills, valleys, to Bethlehem where
Jesus was to be born.
"And Joseph went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nasareth,
into Judea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem . ."
This was the plan of God, simple and uncomplicated. This is a day and age
where it is felt that nothing is of value unless it is done on a tremendous scale; unless
it Costs billions of dollars, God does not necessarily do things in this way. For hund-
reds of years, in the prophecies written in the Old Testament, and by general under.
Standing of the people, the Messiah would come from God and deliver the nation, prob-
ably in some spectacular upheaval, but the Prince of Peace was ultimately born on the
floor of a stable, in an obscure village, in a very small nation not too well regarded
by their neighbours.
The first people to see the Saviour were simple rustic shepherds caring for
their sheep in the fields of their common ancestor, King David. There were no Am-
bassadors or plenipotentiaries from the great kingdoms of the earth, Gabriel the Angel
had come instead with the simple message:
"For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour who is Christ
the Lord." The birth of Christ in Bethlehem is common knowledge in all areas of the
world, and inspite of the cold and hot wars, the political upheavals and economic changes
which are convulsing the world today, the pathways of the mind are once again converg-
ing on that obscure village, in judea, to the manger at the back of the Inn.
In the year 10N, the Incarnation in the stable has greater significance than
at any other period of man's history,
Today ther4 the message of the An gels to mankind is the same as it was over
the fields of bold,
"Glory to 064 in the Highest
And on earth, pet06, Good, Will toward men."
