Bring Quick Results Like most teachers, I don't know what I'd do without my weekends. All right. I know. The hours -are great, there are lots of holidays, and you're sure of your pay at the end of the month. But believe- it or not, it's an exhausting game. Baby- sitters have their moments of frenzy. Policemen some- times get ulcers. To those two jobs, add. the task of stuffing infarmatian daily -into about 500 kids, most of whom can take it or leave it, and you can understand Why teacherte totter towards 4 pm. Fri- day like maids lurching to that first oasis on the far side of the Gobi desert. Every Friday, I come home, eollalpse, and wave feebly to- wards the decanter of Teach- ers' Highland Cream, a medic- inal restorative made in Soot- land for the sole purpoSe of salvaging Sagging teachers. As I lie there, gradually recovering, / allow myself to luxuriate in 'the idea of 48 hours without classes, "This weekend," I muse, "I'in going to get caught up. I'm going to mark all those essays, prepare those, five tests, get my lessons ready fer a whole week a- head. I'm also, by golly, going to get a good sleep tonight, go hunting Satur- day afternoon, sleep in Sunday, and spend the rest of the day reading a good book," Perhaps a verbatim report of the last long weekend will give you an idea of the difference between dream and reality, Friday evening, I'd just begun to regain my joie do vivre-, With aid Of the High- land Cream and a good dinner, When a colleagues called, HO Wanted /to die- cuss at academic problem:' .some kids bad tried to tee fire tO his car on Hal- loween. It turned out that he was sagging a Mt kio, and that he had a predilection for the Crete. A bad combination, I gat to bed at 2:80 in the a.M. Oh, well, I could sleep Satur- day morning. Essays would not 'be marked, but.after all, a fella has to live a little. At 7:30 am., in the dark already, my erife was shak- ing me. She had the steel- ach flu, I had to drive the kids to the city, 200 Miles round trip, for their music lesson, Home at 4 pm. Broth for the sick lady, Rake the last of the leaves. Prepare one of Old. Dad's famous mixed grills: anything that will fry in a fry- ing pan. This one had mush- rooms, eggs, green peppers, a redolent remnant of steak, two wieners, a tomato and a chunk of bologna. Tasty. Two hours of dishwashing: Wandered wearily up to watch TV. Fell asleep, Woke up at 11, p.m. Looked at wife, aOperently dying, Downstairs to turn off the lights, Find lights blazing, hi-ti blaring, kids in the act of lighting fire in fire- place. "Get to bed!" Two hours later, have taught Kim to Waltz (waltzing is any form of dancing that doesn't have a frantie beat); Hugh and Hint have denemetrated, and I have been dragged into, the Monkey, The ktrug, the Vaddoo.
