A Half Million Doilar Nista_ .e
WE ARE PLEASED to confess this
week to 'an inaccuracy in last week's
edition of the News Record. The mxs-
tale occurred in this apace man edit-
orial entitled "13 ;Against 5 for 3,500,"
It was ail;editorial commending
the Clinton Chamber of Commerce on
its interest in munieipal affairs which
ultimately led it to form a .delegation
to council Monday demanding adoption
of a building code for Clinton.
We will always admit mistakes
when theY are drawn to our attention
and proven to be incorrect, and we will.
do everything In our power to rectify
any damage any of our errors may
have caused.
But it is not often we are happy
about making a mistake.
In this case, the error involved half
a million dollars. We had stated Clin-
ton's" debt now stands at $800,000, and
would go over the million mark when
debentures for the public school add♦-
tion and highway improvements were
.added,
That $800,000 'figure is right, but
this is NOT the amount of Clinton's
debt, That figure is Clinton's bonded
indebtedness—money owed in Clinton's
name—but $500,000 of that, amount :is
recoverable from municipalities which
participate in sharing costs of CRSS
.and the recent addition,
We used that figure because it was
used by. a Clinton councillor in under-
lining the need of a building code for
Clinton. lie got the figure from the
town's financial statement and believed
it to be Clinton',s debt with none of the
money recoverable.
When advised of his l~nis-inter-
pre%tion of the financial statement, the
councillor in question advised, us so we
could make a very necessary explana-
tion and correction..
We are happy to make the correc-
tion, because writing a few •words is
an easy way to lift' a half million dollar
debt from over the heads tofmany of
our readers. We must also apologize
to members of Clinton town council and
the mayor, reeve and deputy -reeve, for
mal=ting it, appear as though they had;
spent wildly during their terms in off!ce,
We are not 'happy to •have been
led astray by quoting someone in error,
but we are delighted to be able to pub-
lish the true facts of Clinton's economic
condition , especially when they
lighten the talc load by about half _a
million dollars.
A detailed explanation of Clinton's
economic situation has been provided
for the News -Record by. councillor H.
F, Noonan, chairman of the finance
committee. It appears elsewhere on
this page in the form of a letter to
the editor.
Noy Place For Cuddlers
WHILE IT MAY be true that all
the world .loves a. lover, 'it does not
necessarily follow that anyone loves a
`,,cuddler behind the wheel of • a moving
automobile except possibly the
individual being cuddled.
Yet it is -surprising how tolerant
the police appear to be towards the two-
in -one drivers --two minds with but a
single thought not connected with driv-
ing, two bodies in a single place—which.
we encounter so frequently on the high-
ways.
(W st ent' n "the ^11nnlp in

It may, be, of course, that, the
officers of the law do not shut their
eyes to the `dangerous practice quite
as much as they seem, to. It coiild be
that the sight of a police cruiser pro-
duces instant separation in many cases.
Nevertheless it is odd that it ap-
parently requires an accident or. an
exceptionally, close call to an accident
to bring about a prosecution for care-
less driving on this score, or, to use
a matter-of-fact and unromantic of-
