It has been said that there is nothing permanent ex-
cept change. And, progress in any field brings with it a
certain amount of adjustment. For this reason I thought
it timely to remind you of a few changes occurring When
Direct Distance Dialing and toll-free calling with Code-
rich, Hensall and Seaforth is introduced next month.
Complexities of the equipment in a modern dial tele-
phone exchange sometimes make it possible to complete
a call by dialing an abbreviated form of the number.
However, to be absolutely sure of reaching the number
that you want it is always best to dial the full seven digits,
After November 15 it will be necessary for you to
dial the complete seven digits of a Goderich, Hensall,
Seaforth or Bayfield number in order to take advantage
of the toll-free calling to those centres. And, it is import-
ant that you give your complete seven digit number to
the operator, when she requests it, after you have dialed
a DDD call. These operators, as pictured above, will
be answering calls from many different exchanges, re-
cording your number as you speak to them in an effort
to speed your oall. Delays will occur if the operator
has to ask you more than once to include your exchange
number (482). I would like to suggest that you begin
today to dial all seven figures when making local calls
and, when calling long distance, to give the operator all
seven figures. This will assure completion of your toll-
free calls and the speed of your DOD calls after the
November 15 date,
One other point: please, do not use your new tele.
phone directory until the effective date. In this Way the
annoyance of wrong numbers will be kept to a minimum.

"Squealer" Fined
Earl Walter Connelly, 24, of
6 Rattenbury Street, Clinton,
was fined a total of $80, and
total costs of $5.00 when he
pleaded guilty to charges of
tire equealing and speeding.
,Testimony showed Connelly
—who told the. court he is mar-
ried—was alone in his car on
Sept. 26 when he was arrested
by OPP constable in
ten.
Court was told. Connelly spun
the wheels of his car as he ac-
celerated from the intersec-
tion of Highways 4 and 8 in
the heart of Clinton, and was
driving 50 miles per 'hour in a
30 mile-per-hour zone of town
when he was stopped.
- Previous Charge
The incident happened at
12:55 a.m. Crown Attorney
Wall am - Cochrane. told court
Connelly had been convicted of
squealing his car tires two
years ago • in Clinton..
"I don't know whether you
know it or not," Magistrate
Hays told Connelly, "but as of
July 1 the fine for this sort of
offense has gone up to a maxi-
mum of $100 and suspension of
your license to drive for up to
30 days.
"People in these apartments
along the main street here de-
serve and need their rest, Tire
squealing is a very unpleasant
noise."
Connelly told the court he
is employed as an instructor at
RCAF Station Clinton. Magis-
trate Hays said because the
accused needed his car to get
to and from his employment,
he would not suspend his lic-
ense.
Connelly was fined $50 on
the charge of squealing his
ti r e s (causing unnecessary
noise), and $30 for the charge,
of speeding.
Crash Aftermath
A 24-year-old RCAF Station
Clinton airman was fined $75
and costs of $2.50 when he
was convicted. of, careless driv-
ing in the aftermath of a
head on crash on Highway 8
which seriously injured four
persons.
An additional charge of driv-
ing while,. uninsured against
Napoleon Guy LeBlanc, was
dropped by the crown,
Defense attorney Daniel Mur-
phy of Goderich told the court
LeBlanc was the driver of a
car which collided with another
on August 1 at 12:50 am, on
Highway 8, about 11/2 miles
west of Seaforth,
Admitted Fault
LeBlanc had been attempt-
ing .to pass another ear at the
time of the accident, and caus-
ed the head-on crash, the law-
yer admitted.
He said his client faced a
possible lifetime of . paying off
damage suits against him since
he had not been insured at the
time of the accident. LeBlanc
said he had let his auto insur-
ance lapse because he had plan-
ned to dispose of his car about
that time,
Magistrate Hays recalled the
accused had been :convicted in
1962 of careless driving after
another serious car crash near
Exeter.
Charge Withdrawn
Charges of operating an un-
safe vehicle and careless driv-
ing against Lloyd George Hoy
were withdrawn by Crown At-
torney William Cochrane.
Mr. Cochrane said the charg-
es had been laid following an
accident in Clinton. He said
Iloy had borrowed a motorcycle
without realizing it was in a
state of disrepair, and, al-
though he should have tested
the machine, still could not be
blamed in full for the accident.
Order Service
Personal service was ordered
for five persons who did not
appear in court in answer to
summonses. The names and the
alleged offenses follow:
Kenneth L. Gardner, traffic
light violation; Michael E.
