LOANS FOR STUDENTS
Guaranteed by the Government of Canada
purpose: The purpose of the Canada Student Loans Act is to facilitate bank loans for
students who need financial help to continue full-time studies beyond secondary
school level at Universities and other educational institutions.
Who can apply: Any Canadian citizen, or anyone resident in Canada for one year who intends
to live in Canada after completion of studies, may apply for a loan under the
Act. An applicant must be enrolled or intend to enroll as a full-time student
at an educational institution approved by provincial authorities, and must
meet the standards of academic qualification and financial need established
by the student loan authority in the Province in which he applies.
Amount of loans: Depending upon individual circumstances and financial need, loans up to
$1,000 a year may. be made, with a maximum of $5,000 during a student's
academic career. The Provincial Authority receiving applications and deter-f.
mining eligibility will issue a certificate to each eligible student stating the
maximum amount the student may borrow. This Certificate of Eligibility
is required before a student can arrange a Government Guaranteed Student
Loan with the bank of his choice.
Repayment: Interest-Free and Delayed Repayment Period
To assist students, the interest on loans during the period a student continues
full-time studies, and for six months thereafter, will be paid by the Government
of Canada. During this same period no repayment of principal is required, nor
will any service charge or fee be payable by the student.
Method of Repayment
Borrowers will begin to pay interest and to repay loans six months after they
cease to be full-time students. The current interest rate to students is 534N
per annum. Normally the repayment period will be five to ten years. Borrowers
have the right to repay loans in part or in full at any time without penalty.
Life Insured

CANADA STUDENT LOANS ACT
Rambling With Lucy
(Continued from Page Eight)
they were in mid-Atlantic when war was declared.
Nat receiving a reply to her air mail letter, Lucy
reluctantly made reservations for the August 5 sailing of
the "Athenia". 'Some of her luggage had gone forward to
Liverpool. Within two hours of leaving an the train for
Bath, a cable from Bayfield arrived, It said: "Mother
'better. Suit yourself."
Lucy's aunt Lucy, an invalid, tried to influence her to
telephone Liverpool to stop her luggage. "No," said Lucy.
"Father lost luggage in Liverpool Station when he emigrated
in 1893 and never got it until he went back in 1911."
Superstition Paid Off
Then she felt sorry for her aunt and was toying with
the idea of following her wishes when the Irish housekeeper
spoke up: "Xou know, Miss Lucy, I wish you to stay, but
it isn't lucky to change plans."
Her decision to come home then hung on the fine hair
of superstition!
The officers and personnel of the "Athenia" welcomed
Lucy on board and told her how much better she walked,
They gave her every consideration even with an almost
capacity passenger list. In Montreal they allowed her to .
stay on board ship with Stewardess R. Johnson until train
time. She accompanied Lucy to .the train and saw her
safely in her berth.
Arthritic Attack
Is it any wonder then that the sinking of the "Athenia"
brought on a severe attack of arthritic pain in Lucy's joints.
Many of those who had been so kind to her were lost,
including Stewardess Johnson. Lucy would have been with
her in the life boat which crashed on the Norwegian freight-
er's -propelleic----that is if she hadn't been trapped in the,
dining room or her cabin been on the side the torpedo struck.
On the trip over, Lucy was excused from life-boat drill.
"What happens to me if the ship sinks ?" she asked, "You
are my first care, then I look after myself," replied Miss
Johnson,
