Diary o f a Vagabond
The 'Driver Jumped Clear
Bruce Crewson of Elora, Ont., had a close brush with sefious injury or
death Monday morning when the front-end loader he was driving overturned
in a ditch on Highway 8, just east of Clinton town limits.. Mr. Crewson (shown
at left) was filling a ditch when the heavy machine sunk in soft earth and
rolled down the bank. He jumped clear. The loader was undamaged and later
was righted by a tow truck. (News-Record Photo)

NEW, DEADLINES
FOR 'NEVISARECORD ADVERTISING
By DOROTHY BARKER
at Port Arthur, 'has gone, in
vast sums, toward many Can-
adian payrolls. Millions of tons
of ore have travelled over that
high trestle and been dumped
into the holds of lake freight-
ers since 1945, when the first
ton was recovered from be-
neath its overburden.
An American company, In-
land Steel, stumbled almost by
chance on the opportunity it
sought to acquire a new and
promising iron mine to assure
a supply of high grade ore for
Its steel manufacturing opera-
tion at Indiana Harbor. A new
company was formed and given
the name of Caland — "ca"
for 'Canada and "land" for its
parent company. In the dying
days of 1949 -negotiations were
completed with Steep Rock
Iron Mines Limited for an op-
tion to lease 1,000 acres of
land in the Fall's Bay area.
Drilling proved the ore would
meet the company's needs and
a 99-year lease was signed as
of 3anuary 1, 1953, on a royal-
ty per ton basis,
With the experience of Steep
Reck's pioneering, Caland, for
the next five years, drained
dredged and carted away mil-
lions of yards of salt. Sixty
Million dollars have been spent
to bring the property to its
present efficient open pit op-
eration.
Caland has started' its new
15 million dollar pelletizing
plant. t watched workmen

ing, which will plthably take
tW6 Mit to COltplehie. /how-
ever, if / may be pennilited
a prediction, With a , chief en-
gineer like Bud, Whitman in
Charge, that Want will prob-
ably be spewing pellets with
a resounding rattle into CN's
steel ore cars long before that
date,
Caland has an assured mar-
ket. Behind it are the research
laboratories of Inland Steel,
constantly searching for new
ways of using steel. Caland ore
is bought with American dol-
lars, its transportation to ore
boats over CN's rails is paid
far In American dollars. Cal-
and expects to ship two million
long tons in 1964 and three
million tons annually when the
pelletizer is completed.
In the meantime, Steep
Rock, mining and selling many
thousand tons of the same gr-
ade -ore, collects its royalties.
We Hope So Too
I liked the tribute Inland
Steel's Vice- chairman, Philip
D. Black, sr., paid the Canad-
ian company — "We have fol-
lowed in their (Steep Rock's)
footsteps and profited by their
experience , . , As we look to
the future, we do so with pride
and confidence that this will
be one of the outstanding min-
ing ventures ,of our generation
„ . that its life will be long
and healthy and that it will
Make an everlasting contribut-
ion to the steel industry of
North. America and to the wel-
fare and prosperity of the Pr-
ovince of Ontario and the peo-
ple Of Canada."
