The cold wea- ther can induce drought con- ditions by making the root sys- tem dormant. When the water supply to the crown is slowed down, things begin to happen in the leaves. Chlorophyl breaks down and anthocyanins are formed, causing the red colouration in maple trees. The yellow colouration in birch trees is caused by zantho- phyll pialnents.
