A single-car crash late Friday night on the
Varna Road near Bayfield sent two Seaforth men
to hospital for treatment of their injuries.

light when the accident hap-

The injured youth was at-
tended at the scene by Dr. J.

No Charges
The accident happened at
12:45 a.m, Saturday.
Mr. Johnston told police he
-was travelling within the 30-
mile-per-hour speed limit and
did not see the Martel youth
until it was too late to stop
his car or swerve out of the
-youth's path.
Clinton police said no charg-
es .had been laid.
Martell was reported. in sat-

time.
Second Victim
Martell is the second pedes-
trian this year to have been in-
jured at the intersection of
Highways 4 and S.

17, of RCAF' Station Clinton,
also was struck by a car June
19 as he crossed the intersec-
tion.

don Baxter; 24, of ,Goderich,
driver of the car, with averting

HENSALL — Thieves who
"dropped in" unexpectedly at
Hess Jewelry Store here 'ap-
parently scared themselves and
fled empty-handed.
George Hess, owner of the
Store, said he thinks their ex-
perience frightened the thieves
enough 'to make them think
only of leaving quickly,
The thieves fell through a
roof trap door a distance of
10 feat to the store floor, the
owner said. They landed atop
a coal scuttle amid a shower
of plaster and debris.
They then fled through the
front door of the store,
Nothing was missing from
the store.

the drought explanation have
been carried out, Mr. ail-gen-

near record golf drive Monday
at the Dayfield-Clinton Golf
Course.
Mr. Moore took full advan-
tage of the varied terrain of
the course to send his ball
nearly 400 yards down the 525-
yard, par 5 second hole. '
From the tee, his ball sliced
slightly over the fairway; a
ditch, and a fence by the Bay-
field-Clinton road. • The ball
took a lucky bounce on the
paved road, and bounced along
the pavement, coming to rest
on the shoulder of the, road
within easy second, shot: 44.• the

Mr, 'Hayter came to Clinton
in 1954 with the RCAF as a
sports officer, He remained
here until 1960, then was post-
ed 'to Chatham': N.B. He re-
tired in 1961 and continued to
make his home in Clinton on
Rattenbury Street West where
he had built a new home.
"Bud" is a native of Ottawa
and joined the RCAF in 1939,
and Served overseas during the
Second World War.
20-year-old airman from
RCAF Station Clinton was kil-
led instantly la t e Saturday
afternoon when he was crushed
between an ornamental light
standard and .the car in which
he had been a passenger.
William Stanley Johnston of
the Winnipeg area was pro-
nounced dead at -the scene by
Clinton coroner Dr, F, G. Th-
ompson
Johnston was riding in a oar
with four other airmen when
the automobile skidded on the
rain-slicked Highway 4, and
slid sideways across a lawn
into the light standard.
Thrown From Car
The car was driven by Ro-
bert Leonard Mullins, 18, of
Camp Borden. Other passen-
gers in the car were: Gerry
Wayne Milot, 17; Joseph Clem-
ent Paqueit, 20 and Alan Lea-
mon, 18 all of RCAF Clinton.
None except Johnston suf-
fered any injury.

ainst the concrete base of the
light standard.
Cause Undetermined
The car rocked away from
the post after impact, and the
youth was crushed under the
car and against the post,
At the tine of the accident
the five airmen were south-
bound, apparently returning to
the RCAF base.
The cause of the accident
was not immediately determin-
ed..
Damage to the car was not
extensive, police said.
Constable Burden said the'
fatal 'accident is still under in-
vestigation.

He joined the provincial de-
partment of health as a trainee
in administration and has
worked at provincial hospitals
in Cedar Springs and London.
Recently, -Mr. Hayter has
held the post of special -assis-
tant to the business adminis-
trator at the Ontario Hospital
in London.
For the time being, Mr. and
Mrs. Hayter Will continue ,ta
make their home in Clinton.
It doesn't mean the world
has tilted prematurely and we
are on the verge of winter,
,and it likely has nothing to do
with the recent cold weather.
According to the head of the
University of Toronto's Shade
Tree Laboratory, it may have
been caused by- drought—last
year's drought,

Erik Jorgensen, who its also
an associated professor of bot-
any, says the leaves of shade
trees often turn colour follow-
ing a drought
And although it has been far
from dry this summer, a
drought from the previous year
may . affect very deep L rooted
trees. There may be, pockets in
